Square Enix has unveiled a new line of jigsaw puzzles to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the classic PlayStation RPG, Final Fantasy 9. Among these, the 1,000-piece puzzle titled “Denouement” stands out, depicting the game's protagonists gathered in front of the colossal Iifa Tree. This release is a key part of an extensive anniversary celebration that has seen a variety of merchandise, including vinyl records, picture books, plush toys, and action figures, all designed to delight fans of the enduring title.

The “Denouement” puzzle, measuring 20 by 29 inches, is currently available for purchase in both the US and the UK. It offers players a unique and engaging way to revisit the world of Gaia, the mystical planet where the game's adventures unfold. This particular puzzle, alongside “Integrity” and “Reclusion,” forms a collection that pays homage to the game's narrative and iconic characters. The 25th-anniversary festivities commenced in March 2025 with a dedicated website and have continued to roll out new items well past the game's original July release month.

Final Fantasy 9 casts players in the role of Zidane, a nimble thief whose mission to abduct Princess Garnet quickly escalates into a gripping saga of international conflict and cosmic manipulation. The “Denouement” puzzle vividly captures a pivotal moment in the game: Zidane, Garnet, and their companions observing the Iifa Tree. This ancient, gargantuan tree plays a critical role in the game’s lore, acting as a barrier that prevents Gaia's souls from returning to the planet's crystal for rebirth. Instead, it expels these souls as a life-draining mist, which the game's primary antagonist, Kuja, harnesses to create an army of black mages.

The narrative climax depicted in “Denouement” occurs late in the game when the heroes confront Kuja at the Iifa Tree. They battle their way through formidable foes, including the tree’s guardian, Soulcage, and then Kuja himself, culminating in a confrontation with Necron, an entity intent on eradicating all existence. Following these epic battles, the Iifa Tree collapses, liberating the trapped souls and allowing them to finally return to their rightful place—a resolution that perfectly embodies the puzzle's title, “Denouement.” The other puzzles in the series also feature significant characters: “Reclusion” focuses on Kuja within the Iifa Tree with his Silver Dragon, while “Integrity” showcases Vivi, the beloved black mage and an early prototype of Kuja, gazing up at Zidane against a backdrop of a grand moon.

For those eager to acquire these commemorative items, pre-orders for the “Denouement” puzzle are open on the UK site for a November 2026 release, though dates and piece counts are subject to change. While the US site has indicated that the “Denouement” puzzle is currently sold out, fans can still purchase “Reclusion” and “Integrity” for $39.99 each. Additionally, a range of other merchandise is available, including a foil-stamped “Denouement” playmat, a holofoil playmat, and various music boxes. These puzzles offer a tangible connection to the beloved adventure, allowing fans to symbolically rebuild the iconic Iifa Tree, piece by arduous piece, just as the game’s heroes pieced together the fate of their world.
