Lucasfilm Games is charting a new course for its Star Wars video game ventures, actively seeking collaborations with independent development houses to broaden the scope and diversity of its gaming portfolio. This shift in strategy, highlighted by recent releases like the tactical "Zero Company" and the arcade-style "Galactic Racer," signals a departure from a singular focus on large-scale, high-budget productions.

Douglas Reilly, the Vice President of Lucasfilm Games, articulated this strategic evolution, emphasizing the value of independent studios in bringing fresh perspectives to the beloved Star Wars universe. He noted that while major AAA titles, such as those in the Battlefront series, remain integral, the expansive nature of Star Wars lore offers countless opportunities for storytelling across various genres. Reilly underscored that the primary objective is to cultivate compelling player experiences, irrespective of the development budget or studio size, whether it be AAA or double-A.

This approach marks a significant change from Disney's previous strategy following its acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012. After initially disbanding its internal games division, Disney entered into a ten-year exclusive agreement with Electronic Arts for Star Wars game development. This period, while yielding some successful titles, did not consistently deliver the expected breadth of content. The re-establishment of Lucasfilm Games in 2021 signaled a renewed commitment to direct oversight and a more flexible development model. Reilly confirmed that the company is now more open to pitches from a wider range of developers, not just industry giants. He stressed that while a high standard of quality is maintained, the focus is on innovative ideas and experienced teams, even if they operate on a smaller scale, promising unexpected and exciting future releases.

Despite this embrace of indie creativity, Lucasfilm Games continues to support established franchises and major projects. Upcoming titles include "Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic," a new installment in the acclaimed Knights of the Old Republic series, and a third "Star Wars Jedi" game. Additionally, Quantic Dream is progressing with "Star Wars: Eclipse," and the long-anticipated KOTOR remake is still in development. This balanced approach aims to cater to a broad audience, offering both novel gaming experiences and continuations of fan-favorite sagas within the Star Wars galaxy.

In summary, Lucasfilm Games is strategically diversifying its Star Wars game development by actively engaging with independent studios. This allows for a wider range of creative concepts and genres, moving beyond the traditional AAA model, while simultaneously maintaining a commitment to high-quality experiences and supporting established franchises within the expansive Star Wars universe.
