Dropout Unveils New Scripted Series "MP3" Spoofing Music Video Countdown Shows
Dropout is set to debut a novel live-action scripted series titled "MP3," marking a departure from its signature improv-driven content. This three-part program is designed to humorously imitate the format of traditional music video countdown shows, featuring a distinguished ensemble of actors and an array of original musical compositions. The series is poised to be an innovative experimental undertaking for the streaming platform, with new episodes airing every two weeks. Additionally, all featured songs will be made available on major music streaming platforms, further enriching the audience's engagement with the show's musical aspect.
The newly announced series, "MP3," was revealed on Tuesday and represents a shift in Dropout's content strategy. Unlike many of its predecessors that heavily rely on improvisational comedy, "MP3" is a fully scripted production. The show is slated to run for three episodes, promising a concise yet impactful narrative arc. It aims to parody iconic music video countdowns, reminiscent of programs like MTV's "Total Request Live," by blending comedic sketches with musical performances. This format allows for a unique blend of humor and artistic expression, catering to fans of both scripted comedy and musical entertainment.
A notable aspect of "MP3" is its impressive cast, which includes "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Jeremy Culhane, Skye Townsend, Aparna Nancherla, and the veteran performer Paul F. Tompkins. Culhane, Townsend, and Nancherla will portray the show's hosts, guiding viewers through a selection of music videos, conducting guest interviews, and engaging in humorous disputes with their producer, played by Tompkins. The series also features appearances from popular Dropout personalities such as Katie Marovitch, Lou Wilson, and Jacob Wysocki, who will guest star as various artists in the music videos. Furthermore, Jess McKenna and Zach Reino are involved not only as producers but also as writers for the show, and they are credited with composing the original music. Fans of "Very Important People" will also be delighted to see Anna Garcia's Princess Emily make a cameo, hinting at potential cross-overs with other beloved Dropout characters.
The premiere of "MP3" is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4th, with new episodes releasing bi-weekly thereafter, specifically on November 18th and December 2nd. Given the show's musical focus, each song showcased during an episode will be released on various music streaming services shortly after its broadcast. This initiative aligns with Dropout CEO Sam Reich's vision for the platform, as he recently expressed his desire for Dropout to explore diverse content avenues. The year 2026 has already seen Dropout venture into new territories with licensed content and an original animated series, underscoring its commitment to innovation and expanding its creative horizons. "MP3" is another testament to this ongoing experimental approach, promising fresh and engaging content for its growing audience.
This upcoming series signifies Dropout's continuous efforts to diversify its programming and experiment with new formats. By introducing a scripted, music video countdown spoof, Dropout is not only showcasing its versatility but also providing a platform for both established and emerging talent within its network. The strategic release of accompanying music on streaming services further enhances the show's reach and impact, ensuring that the creative output extends beyond the visual medium. This move reinforces Dropout's reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking streaming service, always eager to push the boundaries of digital entertainment.
