Console gaming enthusiasts are facing an era of escalating hardware costs. This month, however, presents a temporary shift in the market: the Nintendo Switch 2 is currently a more budget-friendly option than the Xbox Series S across Europe and the United Kingdom. This pricing dynamic, while also observed in the United States following Microsoft's earlier price hike announcements, has only recently been confirmed for European and UK markets.

Xbox Series S Price Surge in Europe and UK

The 512GB Xbox Series S, previously Microsoft's most economical console, has seen a substantial price increase in Europe, rising from €349.99 to €499.99, and in the UK, from £299.99 to £429.99. This adjustment places the Switch 2, priced at €469.99 in Europe and £395.99 in the UK, as the more affordable choice until the end of August. While some retailers may still offer the older, lower prices, these are expected to be temporary.

This significant price adjustment for the Xbox Series S follows earlier announcements from Microsoft regarding price increases in the US market, but the specifics for Europe and the UK were disclosed more recently. This puts the Xbox Series S at a higher price point than the Nintendo Switch 2 for the remainder of August, creating a unique market situation where the Switch 2 offers a more cost-effective entry into current-generation gaming. The increased pricing reflects broader trends in console manufacturing and distribution costs, impacting consumer affordability across various regions.

Forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Price Adjustments

Nintendo is also set to implement its own price adjustments for the Switch 2, effective September 1st, 2026. In Europe, the console's price will rise to €499.99, aligning it with the new price of the Xbox Series S. While UK pricing details are still pending official confirmation from Nintendo, it is anticipated that the cost will similarly match the Series S at £429.99.

Despite these upcoming price increases, the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to maintain its position as one of the more accessible gaming consoles available, particularly when compared to higher-end systems such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Consumers can currently benefit from various bundles, including a Pokémon Pokopia console bundle in Europe and a 'Choose Your Game' bundle in the US that offers digital titles like Pokopia, Mario Kart World, or Donkey Kong Bananza. These options provide additional value, even as the console market experiences a general trend toward increased pricing for gaming hardware.
