Blizzard is actively encouraging players of its upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game, World of Warcraft: Forever, to engage with multiple characters, commonly known as 'alts'. This approach aims to enhance the overall player experience and offers several strategic advantages within the game's new structure.

The latest iteration of the enduring MMO is set to debut on November 4, and executive producer Holly Longdale anticipates it will serve as the primary entry point for new participants. She emphasizes that this version presents the most accessible entry barrier to date for newcomers. A central feature of the game is the Legacy System, which rewards players with achievement-style points for significant in-game milestones. These points can be allocated to talent-tree-like options, providing substantial quality-of-life enhancements. The creation of additional characters, or alts, significantly streamlines the accumulation of these points.

Ion Hazzikostas, vice president and senior game director, underscores the incentives for engaging with alternate characters. He states that creating alts and unlocking Legacy points will open up fresh avenues for players. Principal designer Kris Zierhut elaborates on this, mentioning that his detailed analyses indicate that developing alts to acquire easier low-level Legacy points is a more logical progression strategy than exclusively pursuing the most challenging ones. He cites a personal example: if his brother decides to join the game, he can now readily play alongside him with a lower-level alt, rather than struggling to integrate a new player with a high-level main character.

Moreover, fostering the use of alts is a deliberate strategy by Blizzard to ensure players engage with all the new content slated for future updates in Forever. Since the maximum level remains constant, a significant portion of upcoming areas and features will be tailored for characters undergoing the leveling process. Lead game designer Tim Jones explains that this design choice enables players to approach the game in various ways, accommodating different session lengths and preferences. He notes that this flexibility allows players, such as parents with limited time, to log in for shorter periods and still achieve meaningful progression, whether by completing quests or advancing professions. Lead software engineer Michael Nuthals confirms that future patches will introduce new professions, leveling dungeons, and zones, ensuring a continuous stream of content for all players. Nora Mills, another lead software engineer, reiterates the goal of enticing players to create new characters, highlighting that each new journey will offer a distinct experience.

Hazzikostas reveals that the emphasis on alts in Forever has prompted the development team to explore options that bolster this gameplay style, including integrating features like warband banks from the contemporary game. He views the manual transfer of items between main characters and alts as an unnecessary hurdle, suggesting that an account-wide bank could be implemented in the foreseeable future. Tim Jones further assures players that they will consistently introduce new leveling dungeons and zones, providing diverse paths for alt characters and ensuring a varied and engaging experience as players delve into the expansive world of Azeroth.
