Excitement is building for the upcoming release of "Grand Theft Auto 6," which will take players back to the familiar, Miami-inspired Vice City. However, another Miami-set crime narrative is also capturing attention. Universal Pictures recently offered a sneak peek at its forthcoming "Miami Vice" reboot, showcasing Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the highly anticipated period crime drama.

The new iteration, titled "Miami Vice '85," was initially announced in April of the previous year. Joseph Kosinski, known for his work on "Top Gun: Maverick" and "F1," is set to direct, working from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, acclaimed for "Nightcrawler" and "Kong: Skull Island." Jordan and Butler are slated to portray the undercover detectives Tubbs and Crockett, respectively.

A recent social media post confirmed that filming for "Miami Vice '85" is in full swing, with a release date scheduled for May 19, 2028. The star-studded supporting cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland, and Michael Irby.

"Miami Vice" originated as an iconic television series that aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989. Created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann, the show originally featured Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs and Don Johnson as Crockett. This groundbreaking series significantly influenced Rockstar's "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City." Mann later revisited the franchise with a modernized film reboot in 2006, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as the lead detectives. In contrast to Mann's contemporary take, Kosinski's reboot will transport the audience back to the vibrant 1980s Miami, promising a return to the series' roots with stylish attire and abundant neon lights, as suggested by the initial glimpses.

This revival of "Miami Vice" demonstrates a continued fascination with the iconic 1980s aesthetic and storytelling, blending nostalgia with fresh talent. It’s an opportunity to re-explore themes of justice, crime, and the blurred lines between right and wrong, reminding us that classic narratives can always find new relevance and inspire audiences across generations.
