The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) has unveiled the selections for its Rebels With a Cause and Critics' Picks Competition programs, marking its 30th annual celebration from November 6-22. This year's festival is set to showcase an exciting array of cinematic works, including a dedicated Baltic Film Competition, reinforcing PÖFF's commitment to diverse and innovative storytelling from across the globe.

The Rebels With a Cause Competition, curated by Javier Garcia Puerto, highlights films that push the boundaries of conventional cinema. This section will feature nine global premieres, emphasizing unique approaches to filmmaking and providing a platform for both emerging talents and seasoned directors. Among these is Emilija Škarnulytė's Lithuanian-Norwegian co-production, Sounds of the Desert, which broadens Baltic cinema's presence beyond the regional competition, and Dylan Stephen Levers' American debut, Pop Pop, a film exploring themes of toxic masculinity and cancel culture through a blend of internet culture and retro-futuristic aesthetics. Concurrently, the Critics' Picks Competition, under the guidance of Nikolaj Nikitin, will present ten world premieres. This program is dedicated to films that possess a distinctive artistic vision, engaging with genre norms while also dialoguing with cinematic history. The lineup includes international contributions from Japan, China, Morocco, Mexico, and Uruguay, alongside European works, with Estonia represented by Eeva Mägi's Mo Amor.

These carefully curated programs underscore the festival's mission to foster artistic expression and provide a dynamic forum for filmmakers to share their innovative narratives. By championing bold perspectives and challenging storytelling, PÖFF continues to enrich the global cinematic landscape, inspiring audiences and creators alike to explore the expansive possibilities of film as an art form.
