In a significant announcement from the vibrant Red Sea resort, approximately 250 miles south of Cairo, the El Gouna Film Festival has confirmed that acclaimed British director Joanna Hogg will lead the main jury for its ninth edition. The festival is scheduled to unfold from October 15 to October 23. Hogg, known for her profound and personal cinematic narratives, will not only guide the jury's deliberations but will also impart her wisdom in a special masterclass titled “Life Into Film,” a much-anticipated event for aspiring filmmakers and cinephiles alike.

Joining Hogg on the main jury panel are a distinguished group of international talents: Egyptian actress Nahed El Sebaie, recognized for her role in “19 B”; veteran Egyptian composer Khaled Hammad, whose extensive career spans three decades and includes scores for films like “The Yacoubian Building”; Iraqi-Kurdish filmmaker Shawkat Amin Korki, celebrated for works such as “Memories on Stone” and “The Exam”; and Turkish auteur Yeşim Ustaoğlu, whose latest drama, “What Remains,” garnered positive reception at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Beyond the main competition, the festival also revealed the composition of its other jury panels. The feature documentary competition and the “Green Star” jury will be presided over by the Swiss-Iraqi filmmaker, producer, and multidisciplinary artist known simply as Samir. This jury will evaluate documentaries vying for prizes, including an award dedicated to films addressing critical environmental issues. Samir will be joined by Afghanistan-born, Netherlands-based filmmaker Aboozar Amini; Belgian producer Julie Frères; Zurich Film Festival director and co-owner Reta Guetg; and Lebanese film editor Gladys Joujou.

Finally, the short films competition jury features groundbreaking Saudi director Meshal AlJaser, known for “Naga”; Tunisian director Amel Guellaty, acclaimed for “Where the Wind Comes From”; and Greek actor and director Christos Passalis, who has starred in notable films like “Dogtooth” and the Sundance Audience Award winner “Hold Onto Me.” The comprehensive lineup of esteemed jurors promises a thoughtful and rigorous evaluation of the diverse cinematic offerings at this year's El Gouna Film Festival.
