The Irish period thriller "Bad Bridgets," helmed by "Kneecap" director Rich Peppiatt, is gearing up for production in Northern Ireland this July with an impressive roster of actors. Joining the previously announced leads, Emilia Jones and Alison Oliver, are celebrated names such as Colin Farrell, known for his roles in "Banshees of Inisherin" and "In Bruges"; Steve Coogan, acclaimed for "Philomena" and "Legends"; Charlie Heaton from "Stranger Things"; and Domhnall Gleeson, recognized for "Ex Machina" and "Echo Valley." The cast is further strengthened by the addition of Himesh Patel, Niamh Algar, and Simone Kirby.

Last month, news broke that Netflix is officially behind this project. The film is being produced by LuckyChap, a company known for its commitment to compelling storytelling.
A Tale of Resilience and Mayhem
"Bad Bridgets" draws its inspiration from the historical account "Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem, and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women" by Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick. Set against the harsh realities of 19th-century famine-stricken Ireland, the narrative follows two sisters who embark on a perilous journey to America. They seek refuge from an abusive father, rampant poverty, and hunger, only to find themselves among other Irish women, collectively known as "Bridgets," who stir up significant commotion in New York City.
From Book to Screen: The Genesis of 'Bad Bridgets'
The rights to the book were secured by Peppiatt and his "Kneecap" collaborator Trevor Birney in 2025. They are producing the film under their Coup d'Etat Films banner, in partnership with LuckyChap. Cáit Collins is on board as an executive producer, guiding the project through its development.
Award-Winning Crew Behind the Scenes
The production boasts a team of highly decorated professionals. BAFTA-winning cinematographer Ryan Kernaghan, known for his work on "Kneecap" and "Trespasses," is handling the visual direction. The artistic vision is further supported by Oscar and BAFTA-winning production designer James Price, celebrated for "Poor Things," and an Oscar and BAFTA-winning costume designer, bringing their expertise from films like "Frankenstein" to this project.

The development phase of "Bad Bridgets" received crucial backing from Queen's University Belfast. The film's production is also benefiting from the support of Northern Ireland Screen, emphasizing a collaborative effort to bring this historical drama to life.
