Rivian R2 Performance Gains with All-Terrain Tires

When examining the performance characteristics of the 2027 Rivian R2, a notable discovery emerged regarding its tire configurations. Contrary to conventional expectations, the electric SUV equipped with the optional 20-inch all-terrain tires exhibited superior on-road handling and stopping capabilities compared to the standard 21-inch street-oriented tires. This unexpected advantage challenges the common belief that all-terrain tires inherently compromise road performance for off-pavement prowess. Specifically, the R2 with all-terrain tires achieved a better skidpad result of 0.84 g, surpassing the 0.81 g recorded with street tires. Furthermore, braking distances from 70 mph and 100 mph were substantially reduced by 12 feet and 43 feet, respectively, showcasing a significant improvement in emergency response. Even acceleration saw a fractional enhancement, with the all-terrain variant reaching 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, a tenth faster than its counterpart.

Despite these performance benefits, the all-terrain tires do introduce a predictable drawback in terms of driving range. The EPA-estimated range drops from 330 miles with the 21-inch street tires to 307 miles with the 20-inch all-terrains. Our real-world 75-mph highway range test revealed an even more pronounced difference, with the all-terrain R2 covering 220 miles compared to 260 miles for the street-tire version. This trade-off suggests a clear choice for consumers: prioritize enhanced on-road dynamics and a slightly more comfortable ride with the all-terrains, or opt for extended range with the street tires. The BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A+ tires used on the Rivian R2 are distinct from other versions of the same model, featuring a higher speed rating, a lesser M+S rating instead of the three-peak mountain snowflake label for snow performance, and reduced tread depth. These unique specifications likely contribute to their atypical on-road performance gains, blurring the lines between traditional all-terrain and street tire characteristics.

Ultimately, the decision between tire options for the Rivian R2 hinges on individual preferences and driving needs. The all-terrain tires, with their robust appearance and improved safety metrics in critical driving situations, present a compelling case for many buyers. The marginal improvement in ride comfort also adds to their appeal. This innovative approach to tire design by Rivian and BFGoodrich demonstrates a forward-thinking strategy, merging the benefits of different tire types to offer a versatile and high-performing electric SUV. Such advancements in automotive engineering highlight the continuous pursuit of optimized vehicle performance and safety, adapting to diverse driving conditions and consumer demands.
