Over the past year, a detailed analysis of individual graphics card pricing has revealed a stark reality: the cost of these essential components has consistently escalated. Despite a brief respite in October, where many GPUs were available at or below their manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), the market took an unfortunate turn, pushing prices to unprecedented levels, making current-generation graphics cards less attainable for many consumers.
Graphics Card Market Experiences Significant Price Increases Over the Last Year
Since August 14, 2025, a dedicated effort has been made to monitor the market prices of the latest graphics processing units (GPUs) from leading manufacturers including Nvidia, AMD, and Intel. This meticulous tracking, performed on an almost weekly basis, focuses on identifying the lowest available prices for brand-new, in-box GPUs from reputable retailers, excluding refurbished items or dubious third-party sellers.
Initially, in August of last year, the market was already challenging due to high demand and limited stock, resulting in most GPUs being sold above their MSRPs. This situation worsened following what has been dubbed the 'RAMpocalypse,' a memory crisis that severely impacted the GPU market. Prices, particularly for Nvidia's high-end models, began an upward trajectory, fundamentally altering the landscape for PC enthusiasts.
A critical turning point occurred around October, a brief and almost idyllic period where many GPUs, with the notable exception of the RTX 5090, were astonishingly available at or even below their launch prices. This affordability, however, was short-lived. By the end of November, following Black Friday sales, the market experienced a dramatic shift, with prices soaring once more as the memory crisis intensified. The RTX 5080 led this surge, with nearly all other GPUs following suit into the new year.
The impact has been particularly pronounced on Nvidia's offerings. For instance, the RTX 5070, which had hovered around its $549 MSRP, rapidly jumped to over $700, and is now often found at $755 or even $800. Similarly, the RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB saw a staggering 51% increase. This makes these cards, especially those with more than 8 GB of VRAM, increasingly irrelevant for the average gamer due to their prohibitive costs. In contrast, AMD's RDNA 4-based cards, such as the RX 9070 GRE, RX 9070, and RX 9070 XT, have maintained more sensible pricing, generally remaining below the current cost of an RTX 5070. However, there are indications that this may soon change.
