The eagerly awaited sequel to the acclaimed 2017 title, "Thimbleweed Park," is advancing under an unconventional financial arrangement. Rather than relying on familiar crowdfunding platforms or conventional publishing deals, the project has secured exclusive backing from a private, affluent enthusiast. This approach allows the development team significant autonomy and guarantees equitable compensation, sidestepping the often stringent terms imposed by traditional industry financiers.

Ron Gilbert, the mastermind behind "Thimbleweed Park," recently shed light on the unique financing model for its follow-up. Despite the original game’s successful Kickstarter campaign, which amassed over $620,000, Gilbert expressed a desire to avoid crowdfunding for the sequel. He also found the terms offered by conventional publishers to be less than ideal. According to Gilbert, publishers typically demand a significant share of profits even after recovering their initial investment, or structure agreements such that developers only profit from major blockbusters, which he considered inequitable.

The solution emerged through a friend who connected Gilbert with an individual outside the gaming industry. This anonymous benefactor, described as a devoted fan of adventure games and particularly fond of "Thimbleweed Park," stepped forward to provide the necessary capital. Gilbert presented a budget for approximately two years of development, a figure that exceeded the original game’s $1 million requirement. This increased budget aims to account for inflation and ensure every team member receives fair wages.

The private investor readily agreed to the proposed terms, establishing a financial agreement that Gilbert praised for its fairness. Under this arrangement, the investor quickly recoups their initial investment, followed by a reasonable profit-sharing model. This novel funding strategy highlights a growing trend where creators seek alternative pathways to maintain artistic control and secure more favorable financial conditions for their projects, especially within niche or beloved independent game communities.

While an official release date for "Thimbleweed Park 2" is targeted for early 2028, its availability on platforms like the Switch or its successor, the Switch 2, has yet to be confirmed. This independent funding model underscores a commitment to artistic integrity and a developer-friendly financial structure, setting a noteworthy precedent for future game development projects.
