Doug Cockle, the renowned voice actor behind Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher 3, recently shared his perspective on how the character he's embodied for years transitioned to live-action on streaming platforms. With Henry Cavill initially taking on the mantle, and now Liam Hemsworth set to continue, many might wonder if Cockle has drawn inspiration from these new interpretations.

The Original Geralt Speaks: A Candid Look at Netflix's "The Witcher" Influence

During Gamescom 2026, speaking with PC Gamer's Joshua Wolens, Cockle unequivocally stated, "No, because we were first." This lighthearted yet firm response highlights the long-standing history he has with the character. John Schwab, the voice actor for Dandelion, Geralt's loyal companion, humorously chimed in, poking fun at Netflix for not extending a cameo invitation to either of them: "And I still haven't got a call for a cameo. Have you?" he asked Cockle, to which Cockle replied, "No!" Schwab then playfully urged, "Come on, guys!"

Cockle further revealed that he had, perhaps jokingly, suggested to the showrunners that they "bring me in every episode. Just put me in the background. Pull a Stan Lee or something, y'know? But did they do it? No."

Despite the playful banter, Schwab was quick to commend the Netflix adaptation, particularly praising Joey Batey's portrayal of Jaskier (Dandelion), acknowledging that Batey "has really done a good job in finding the depths, and it's gone a completely different way." Schwab then playfully accused the show of "stealing stuff" from Cockle, prompting Cockle to acknowledge that Henry Cavill himself has publicly stated that Cockle's performance as Geralt "informed" or "inspired" his own approach. Cockle elaborated, "He didn't copy me, he went 'Doug's Geralt is cool, I want to do something like that', and then he turned it into his own. Which is what all artists do and should do, anyways. And he did a fantastic job of it."

This discussion offers a fascinating glimpse into the interplay between different artistic interpretations of the same beloved character. It underscores the respect voice actors and live-action actors have for each other's contributions, while also celebrating the unique origins of a character that has captured the hearts of many. Fans can anticipate more of Cockle's distinctive portrayal in The Witcher 3's upcoming DLC, "Songs of the Past."
