The documentary 'O Projeto' (The Project), born from the collaboration between Brazilian filmmaker Sabrina Fidalgo and Swiss photographer Yvan Rodic, embarked on its festival journey at Brazil's Gramado Film Festival and is now reaching wider audiences at the Mostra de São Paulo. This cinematic endeavor, conceived during the Black Lives Matter protests, explores the multifaceted and lingering impacts of over six centuries of colonialism. The film, a road movie spanning Brazil, Germany, and Switzerland, skillfully weaves together archival materials, insightful first-person interviews with influential figures like Grada Kilomba and Djamila Ribeiro, and poetic interludes to deeply reflect on both the overt and subtle scars of historical subjugation. It emerged from a shared critical perspective between Fidalgo and Rodic, who, despite their different backgrounds, united their unique viewpoints to examine how Europe's colonial past continues to shape contemporary societies across the global North and South.

The creation of 'O Projeto' presented numerous challenges, particularly during its early development amidst the pandemic and under the Bolsonaro government, which severely impacted cultural funding and travel. Despite these obstacles, the film became the first Brazilian project to receive support from the philanthropic Le Fonds de Dotation agnès b. The filmmakers recount intensive development phases marked by extensive dialogues with their producers at Gullane and other creative partners. Rodic acknowledged the ambitious scope of the subject matter, emphasizing that the 'magic' of their collaboration lay in their ability to bridge differing perspectives with a strong connection, shared cultural references, and a passion for the topic, which ultimately shaped the film's unique character. Fidalgo highlighted this dynamic as central to the film’s essence: exploring how two individuals from vastly different positions—a white Swiss man from the global North and a Black Brazilian woman from the global South—can converge in their understanding of colonialism's consequences, often challenging preconceived notions along the way.

Throughout its production, 'O Projeto' garnered significant support from prominent figures in cinema, including Laís Bodanzky, an associate producer, and Oscar-winning director Walter Salles, who served as an ongoing supporter. Salles praised the film as a relevant, polyphonic, proactive, and incisive exploration of colonialism and whiteness. Bodanzky's involvement stemmed from a long-standing mutual admiration with Fidalgo, solidifying her role as a consultant. Currently, Fidalgo is also developing 'Carnaval,' her first fiction feature, which will complete a trilogy examining women's experiences. The timing of 'O Projeto's' release in São Paulo is particularly significant, coinciding with Brazil's intense presidential elections. Fidalgo views the film not merely as a documentary but as a manifesto, resonating with contemporary social movements and urging audiences to engage actively in shaping a more just future, especially in light of the critical political choices facing Brazil. The film, a collaborative effort by Gullane, Fidalgo Produções, Globo Filmes, Canal Brasil, and Yvan Rodic Media, is set for theatrical release in Brazil on November 19.

This film serves as a powerful testament to the enduring quest for truth and justice, reminding us that by confronting the complexities of our past, we can collectively inspire a more equitable future. It underscores the profound impact of art as a catalyst for dialogue and change, reinforcing the idea that understanding diverse perspectives is crucial for fostering progress and unity.
