A photographer embarked on a journey to chronicle the spirited Sakela festival, an important cultural event for the Kirat Rai community, at the United Gurkha Academy. Following an invitation from one of the subjects of his 'The Boys of the Blue City' series, Leo Bidhan, the artist gained access to the school premises after receiving approval from the principal. This allowed for an immersive exploration of the school's environment, from classrooms to hallways and sprawling grounds, offering a unique perspective on the festive preparations.

The presence of the camera sparked immediate excitement among the young attendees, who, with eager eyes and joyful cheers, formed a queue to have their portraits taken. This interaction facilitated an effortless rapport between the photographer and the children, referred to affectionately as 'bhais and bahinis,' who openly shared their enthusiasm. The Sakela festival itself is a rich tapestry of dance, music, and collective rituals, deeply rooted in the worship of nature, making it a cornerstone celebration for the Kirat Rai people. In Dharan, this festival transcends boundaries, uniting individuals from various backgrounds in a shared celebration of friendship, communal participation, and profound cultural experiences.

Observing the students, many of whom are of Kirati Limbu descent, proudly showcasing their heritage through intricate traditional clothing and adornments, was a particularly compelling aspect of the experience. The photographer aimed to capture this palpable sense of pride, evident in their confident presentation and wholehearted engagement in the festivities. This photographic series, titled 'Sakela at United Gurkha Academy,' delves into the concept of cultural inheritance, demonstrating that traditions are not merely historical relics but dynamic practices actively lived, learned, and continuously passed down to future generations from early childhood through daily interaction and celebration.

This project beautifully illustrates the enduring power of cultural traditions to connect communities and foster a sense of belonging. It serves as a reminder that the active participation of youth in cultural events is crucial for the vitality and continuity of heritage, enriching societal bonds and promoting mutual understanding across diverse groups.
