The live-action adaptation of Disney's 'Moana' is making its way to home entertainment platforms, with a digital release slated for September 8th, followed by physical formats on October 6th. This highly anticipated home debut arrives just under two months after its cinematic premiere.

Fans can anticipate an array of supplementary content across the digital and physical editions, including an interactive sing-along feature and exclusive behind-the-scenes documentaries. These special segments delve into the casting process of newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, the intricate design of Motunui, Tiana Nonosina Liufau’s choreographic contributions, and Liz McGregor’s costume artistry. Additionally, a segment reunites Lin-Manuel Miranda with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, as they discuss the reimagining of original songs and the creation of the new track, "Along the Way." Disney will also unveil a limited-edition 4K UHD SteelBook on October 6th, showcasing Lagaʻaia and Johnson alongside beloved characters Pua and Heihei. For those looking to complete their collection, a three-film set will be available, encompassing the live-action movie, the original animated 'Moana,' and 'Moana 2,' accessible digitally from September 8th and on DVD from October 6th.

Despite the rich bonus features for its home release, the live-action 'Moana' experienced a less-than-stellar theatrical run. The film, which opened to $43.1 million domestically, struggled to match the global success of its animated predecessor, which earned approximately $684 million, or the blockbuster status of 2024’s 'Moana 2.'

This release underscores the evolving landscape of film distribution, where cinematic performance no longer solely dictates a film's ultimate reach. While the theatrical run may not have met initial expectations, the extensive home entertainment package offers a new opportunity for audiences to engage with the story and its creation. It highlights the enduring magic of storytelling and the dedicated artistry involved in bringing such narratives to life, encouraging a broader appreciation for the creative endeavors behind animated and live-action cinema alike.
