DC Studios Head Confident in Strategy Despite 'Supergirl's Modest Box Office Debut
DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has publicly affirmed his belief in the company's long-term strategic plan, even though the film 'Supergirl' recently had a less-than-stellar opening weekend at the box office. Safran, who leads the studio alongside James Gunn, conveyed his continued assurance in the direction they charted in early 2023, shortly after they took on their leadership roles.
The film 'Supergirl,' which features Milly Alcock in the lead role, premiered last Friday, distributed by Warner Bros. It garnered $38 million in the domestic market, falling short of pre-release estimates that projected an opening closer to $50 million. Globally, the movie, directed by Craig Gillespie, collected $68 million during its debut weekend. This comes approximately one year after 'Superman,' another significant project from Safran and Gunn's DC Universe, achieved considerable success, raking in $618 million worldwide. 'Supergirl' was produced with a budget of $170 million, which is notably less than 'Superman's' $225 million production cost.
Looking ahead, DC Studios has a robust lineup of projects. On the cinematic front, the body horror film 'Clayface,' starring Tom Rhys Harries, is scheduled for release this October, followed by the 'Superman' sequel, 'Man of Tomorrow,' set to hit theaters next July. In television, the animated series 'Creature Commandos' has secured a second season renewal, and 'Lanterns,' featuring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern characters, is slated to debut in August. Additionally, the Emmy-winning series 'The Penguin,' with Colin Farrell reprising his role from Matt Reeves' 'The Batman,' continues to develop as a standalone project outside the main DC Universe continuity. At the 'Supergirl' premiere, executive producer Lars P. Winther also confirmed strong support for the DC Universe slate from David Ellison, chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance, whose company's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery recently received approval from the Department of Justice.
