Zendaya's Chilly Challenge on 'The Odyssey' Set and Nolan's High Praise
During the opening days of production for Christopher Nolan's epic film, “The Odyssey,” in the frigid landscapes of Iceland, actress Zendaya encountered an unforeseen obstacle. The intense cold rendered her mouth nearly immobile, making it arduous to articulate her dialogue, despite her thorough preparation for the role of the Greek deity Athena. This climatic challenge added to the already daunting experience of starring in her first Nolan feature, which she described as quite anxiety-inducing.
Zendaya, in an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, recounted her struggle with the biting Icelandic chill. Her meticulously rehearsed lines became garbled due to her frozen mouth, leading to an embarrassing moment where her speech was indecipherable. Nevertheless, her initial difficulties did not diminish director Nolan's high regard for her talent. He emphatically stated in a separate interview with Fandango that Zendaya's performance was perpetually impeccable, distinguishing her as the sole actor to receive such a commendation during the production.
Interestingly, Zendaya was not the only cast member to experience a moment of apprehension on set. Tom Holland, who portrays Odysseus’ son Telemachus, initially feared Nolan was displeased with his performance because the director frequently halted takes. Holland later discovered that these interruptions were due to the technical constraints of IMAX cameras, which have a limited recording duration of three minutes per take. This revelation brought a sense of relief to Holland, who had believed his acting was subpar. The highly anticipated film “The Odyssey” is slated for release by Universal Pictures on July 17th.
