Xanadu Next, an action RPG initially created by Nihon Falcom for the Nokia N-Gage, recently appeared on Steam's Autumn sale, capturing attention with its intriguing backstory. Although its origins were humble, the game promises a compelling experience for those curious enough to delve into its depths.

This game is a long-awaited follow-up to the 1985 PC-88 title, Xanadu: Dragon Slayer 2, recognized as one of the pioneering action RPGs. After a two-decade hiatus, Nihon Falcom released Xanadu Next in 2005, initially exclusive to Japan. A PC adaptation, released months after the N-Gage version, reportedly offered a superior gameplay experience. This PC iteration, now available on Steam, has garnered a reputation for standing alongside Nihon Falcom's other acclaimed works like Ys and The Legend of Heroes, distinguishing itself with a unique blend of console and PC design philosophies.

My six-hour journey into the 2016 English re-release of Xanadu Next reveals a game that, while not groundbreaking, provides a comforting and engaging isometric hack-and-slash experience with a Metroidvania-inspired design. The game features a central hub for character progression and trading, complemented by a world that unfolds through light puzzle-solving and enjoyable combat. Its grind, though present, feels rewarding, driven by the satisfaction of uncovering new areas and connections within its blocky, atmospheric world. The game's ambiance skillfully combines the cheerful elements of classic JRPGs with a melancholic undertone. While the game has some minor eccentricities, such as limited native controller support and manual graphics configuration, the community has provided solutions, making it highly playable even on platforms like the Steam Deck.

The unexpected appeal of Xanadu Next has reignited an interest in Nihon Falcom's extensive catalog, much of which is also currently available at reduced prices on Steam. It serves as a testament to how older, overlooked titles can find new life and appreciation among modern players, showcasing enduring design principles and the timeless joy of exploration and progression in a well-crafted virtual world.
