While 2026 has been a lean year for captivating movie musicals, with several disappointing releases, a significant cinematic event has arrived for Netflix subscribers: John M. Chu’s “Wicked: For Good.” This adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, which debuted today, July 20, is an essential watch. Following the initial installment, “Wicked” (2024), both films are now available for streaming, providing a perfect weekend viewing experience for both long-time devotees and those discovering the enchanting world of “Wicked” for the first time.

“For Good,” which picks up a year after the first film, is based on Stephen Schwartz’s musical and Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel. It follows Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) as she evades the clutches of the powerful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) and his allies, including Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). Elphaba’s attempts to expose the Wizard's tyranny have unintended consequences, leading the citizens of Oz to believe her to be as wicked as he claims. Meanwhile, her complex relationship with Glinda (Ariana Grande) forces Glinda to confront her role within the Wizard's authoritarian regime.

The on-screen chemistry between Erivo and Grande as Elphaba and Glinda is particularly captivating, making their performances unforgettable. Their bond is thoroughly explored in “For Good,” with numerous scenes highlighting their evolving friendship, even amidst romantic entanglements. It’s a refreshing depiction of female friendship, where a love triangle doesn't fracture their profound connection. The movie also uses Schwartz’s songs to reflect the different stages of Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship, transitioning from the optimistic tone of the first film to the darker, more challenging narrative of “For Good.” This adaptation truly captures the essence of the original stage musical, providing a deep understanding of its enduring appeal.

“Wicked: For Good” transcends the typical musical experience, offering a narrative that champions loyalty, resilience, and the courage to challenge injustice. It reminds us that true strength lies in standing up for what is right, even when faced with adversity, and that the bonds of genuine friendship can overcome any obstacle, illuminating the path toward a more compassionate and equitable world.
