WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames for Enhanced Privacy
WhatsApp, the widely utilized messaging service with a global user base of three billion, is undergoing a transformative update. This forthcoming change will empower individuals to utilize personalized usernames for identification, moving away from the previous reliance on phone numbers. The messaging application, owned by Meta, announced the impending feature, indicating that users will soon be able to establish unique identifiers. This enhancement will be gradually implemented throughout the year, allowing early adopters to reserve their desired handles. The primary motivation behind this evolution is to address ongoing concerns regarding data protection and to offer users a more secure way to engage on the platform. By enabling communication through handles alone, the need to disclose sensitive personal information, such as phone numbers, is significantly reduced. There will be no public directories of usernames or autocomplete suggestions, ensuring that contact can only be initiated by those who possess the exact username.

These include optional username keys—short numerical codes—that users can add, requiring both the username and key for initial contact. For businesses, organizations, and creators already active on Meta's other platforms like Instagram and Facebook, there will be an opportunity to claim their existing usernames on WhatsApp. Usernames must adhere to a length between three and thirty-five characters. To prevent impersonation, the platform will reserve handles for prominent individuals and governmental entities. Users wishing to secure a specific username will need to access the Settings, Account, and then Username tabs within the latest version of the WhatsApp mobile application, as this process cannot be completed via the web or desktop versions.
The rollout of this feature will occur incrementally over the coming months, with notifications issued to users as availability expands to their respective regions.
