West Hollywood Faces Major Disruptions After Historic Water Main Burst
West Hollywood has been plunged into chaos following the catastrophic failure of a century-old water main, leading to widespread flooding that has brought the iconic Sunset Strip to a standstill. Thousands of gallons of water surged through the streets after the 36-inch pipeline fractured, causing significant property damage, prompting numerous road closures, and forcing many local businesses to cease operations indefinitely. Authorities are diligently working to manage the situation, urging residents and businesses to minimize water consumption as repair efforts commence.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, specifically around 2:30 a.m., when the vintage 36-inch steel main, originally laid down 110 years ago, suffered a critical rupture. Emergency teams from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) swiftly responded, managing to halt the water flow by approximately 7:30 a.m. While residents are experiencing some inconvenience, LADWP assures the public that no complete water service interruptions are foreseen. Nevertheless, both the department and the Los Angeles mayor’s office have appealed to the community to conserve water to ease pressure on the remaining infrastructure.
Crews are currently engaged in a substantial effort to extract an estimated 195,000 gallons of water from the compromised 0.7-mile section of the pipe and its immediate surroundings. This precedes the crucial phase of assessing the full extent of the damage and undertaking necessary repairs. The primary challenge involves stabilizing the affected ground before any excavation work can safely proceed. Meanwhile, West Hollywood's water supply is being rerouted through a smaller 8-inch pipe to maintain continuity for the duration of the emergency.
Mayor Karen Bass visited the site on Thursday morning, later communicating to WeHo residents the importance of their cooperation. She emphasized the need for people to steer clear of the damaged zones and to use water judiciously. The Mayor also advised those who have incurred property damage to directly engage with LADWP personnel present on-site for assistance and claims processing. LADWP has established a claims office at 1010 Palm Ave., operating daily until 7 p.m. to address community concerns.
The deluge resulted in more than just surface flooding; a large sinkhole unexpectedly appeared on a West Hollywood sidewalk near Sunset Boulevard. Eyewitnesses reported two individuals falling into the cavity. During Thursday morning’s rush hour, traffic was noticeably rerouted around the precarious opening. Extensive road closures are in force along Sunset Boulevard, specifically between Larrabee Street and La Cienega Boulevard, as well as on various adjacent streets. These measures are critical for public safety and to facilitate the movement of repair and emergency services.
Reports from customers, particularly those residing on higher floors of buildings, indicate a noticeable drop in water pressure. LADWP is actively recalibrating its water distribution systems to normalize pressure without inadvertently triggering new complications. Many local establishments, such as the popular Dialog Cafe, have had to close their doors, facing an uncertain future as they contend with the aftermath. The cafe's management expressed their dedication to cleaning up and restoring their premises, acknowledging that the reopening date remains unknown.
The West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station has enforced strict street closures, prohibiting all through traffic in specific critical areas including Horn Avenue at Sunset Boulevard, San Vicente Boulevard and North Clark Street at Sunset Boulevard (eastbound traffic restricted), and Larrabee Street at Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard. Palm Avenue at Santa Monica Boulevard is also affected. Residents are strongly advised to avoid these areas for the next few days to allow unimpeded access for repair crews. Individuals needing to access soft-closure zones are requested to have identification or proof of residency readily available. In a gesture of support, several local hotels are offering discounted rates to West Hollywood residents displaced by the flooding, including the Ziggy Hotel, West Hollywood Edition, and The London Hotel.
