This urgent action was prompted by a deeply tragic incident in February 2023, where a 23-month-old boy in Oregon succumbed to strangulation and asphyxia. Investigations revealed that the child's shirt became ensnared on the play kitchen's accessory hooks while he was reportedly attempting to climb on the counter or navigate through the unit's rear opening. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) highlighted that the child was tragically unable to free himself from this perilous entrapment. These play kitchens, designed for children aged three and above, were initially produced by KidKraft, Inc., which filed for bankruptcy in May 2024. They were widely available for purchase online through KidKraft.com, Amazon.com, and Walmart.com between 2018 and July 2025, with prices ranging from $120 to $270. Owners of these affected play kitchens are strongly advised to discontinue their use immediately. Backyard Kids has provided detailed instructions on their website for the safe removal of the original hooks and offers free replacement hooks. Consumers are required to complete an online form and submit photographic evidence of the hooks' removal to receive their replacements.
