Emmy Award winner Damon Lindelof, known for his work on shows like Lost, The Leftovers, and the critically acclaimed miniseries Watchmen, is once again venturing into the realm where enigmatic storytelling meets extraordinary abilities. His latest endeavor is an upcoming HBO series titled Lanterns, set to launch in just three weeks. This project combines elements of mystery and superhero narratives, promising a fresh take on the genre.

For Lanterns, Lindelof has joined forces with Chris Mundy, showrunner of Ozark, and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer Tom King. Together, they have crafted a neo-Western tale centered around the iconic Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. The series is integrated into James Gunn's expansive DC Universe, with Mundy serving as showrunner and the trio collaborating on the pilot episode. The narrative positions Lanterns as more akin to a detective drama than a typical superhero production. The plot unfolds as Jordan is tasked by the Guardians of the Universe to mentor Stewart. Their contrasting personalities—Jordan, a former hotshot pilot, and Stewart, a disciplined Marine—create immediate friction. Stewart's initiation into fieldwork involves investigating a homicide in a tight-knit Nebraska community, which Jordan suspects has extraterrestrial links. Their pursuit of answers leads them to confront local law enforcement, including Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald), and a powerful rancher named William Macon (Garret Dillahunt). Both Green Lanterns harbor hidden aspects of their pasts and personal ambitions, necessitating their cooperation to unravel a conspiracy that extends far beyond the confines of Nebraska.

Lanterns marks the third television series within the evolving DC Universe. While it distinctively differs in tone from other DCU shows like James Gunn's Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, it will nonetheless weave into Gunn's overarching storyline. The show will introduce Green Lantern Guy Gardner, previously seen in Gunn's Superman, and will also lay groundwork for Gunn's forthcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, where John Stewart will join other heroes to battle Brainiac. Viewers can catch the premiere of Lanterns on August 16 on HBO, with streaming options also available on HBO Max.

This innovative series challenges traditional superhero tropes by intertwining complex character dynamics with a compelling mystery. It encourages audiences to look beyond the surface of heroic personas and consider the intricate human elements that drive even the most powerful beings. The collaboration of seasoned storytellers promises a narrative that is both thought-provoking and engaging, pushing the boundaries of what a superhero story can be.

AMD Challenges Nvidia's CUDA Dominance in AI Hardware Market
AMD's corporate VP Andrew Dieckman claims that Nvidia's CUDA is becoming a "non-event" for many companies in the AI hardware space. He suggests that programming at higher levels of abstraction and the efficacy of AI agents themselves are diminishing the necessity of CUDA, potentially opening doors for alternatives like AMD's ROCm. This shift could threaten Nvidia's significant market share in AI, which has largely been secured by its CUDA ecosystem.
