This piece delves into photographer Johanna Berghorn's unique undertaking during the Cannes Film Festival, where she sought to illuminate the experiences of the city's permanent residents amidst the cinematic spectacle.

Unmasking the Heart of Cannes: Beyond the Silver Screen's Shadow

A Muted Beginning: Navigating Cannes Without a Voice

Upon her arrival in Cannes for the renowned film festival, photographer Johanna Berghorn found herself in an unexpected predicament: she had completely lost her voice. This challenge arose on her very first evening, following a boisterous dinner, leaving her speechless the next morning. It presented a significant hurdle for her planned project, which involved interviewing locals. This festival marked her first since becoming a mother, and she noticed a decline in her professional engagements, suggesting a shift in perception within the industry regarding her availability and commitment.

The Spark of a Personal Endeavor: Seeking Local Narratives

Inspired by a friend's advice to undertake a personal project and a rumor that Cannes residents harbored resentment towards the festival, Berghorn saw an opportunity. With more free time than usual and a compelling question about the locals' true feelings, she felt a strong desire to return to her roots in documentary photography. Unable to speak, she used Google Translate on her phone as her interpreter, embarking on a quest to capture the authentic spirit of Cannes' ordinary citizens.

Encounters with the Everyday Heroes of Cannes

Berghorn engaged with a diverse array of individuals, from street cleaners and taxi drivers to a cook and a lifeguard at the Ritz Carlton. She met a dedicated tailoring couple, who, despite grueling hours during the festival, expressed immense joy in serving celebrity stylists. They generously shared their time and gifts, delighted that someone had come to capture their story rather than the glamour of the event. She also photographed a security guard on her break and beachgoers who had set up camp to observe the unfolding spectacle, some of whom had made it an annual tradition.

Francesca's Cinematic Debut and François's Unwavering Enthusiasm

Among her subjects was Francesca, who embraced her impromptu photoshoot with a theatrical flair, seemingly having prepared for her Cannes moment her entire life. Although language barriers made some details of Francesca's past, possibly as a ballerina, unclear, her vivacious spirit shone through. Berghorn also formed an unexpected daily ritual with François, an ice cream vendor along the Croisette. François, a self-proclaimed and devoted festival enthusiast, shared his passion through brochures and merchandise, becoming a beloved part of Berghorn's experience and an embodiment of the city's connection to the festival.

The Unexpected Verdict: Cannes Embraces Its Festival

Despite initial expectations of finding widespread disapproval, Berghorn discovered a deep-seated affection for the festival among all twenty-five individuals she interviewed. The street cleaner, while preferring anonymity, expressed pride in his contribution to the city's vibrancy during the event. Jiyan, the tailor, despite exhaustion, glowed with pride, showcasing photos of red-carpet gowns she had helped create. Francesca, by the end of their interaction, was radiating the joy of her own personal premiere. And François, the ice cream vendor, stood out as the festival's most fervent and proud supporter.

The True Stars of Cannes: A Tapestry of Local Pride

While twenty-five interviews don't constitute a comprehensive study, the consistent positive responses shifted Berghorn's perspective. What she brought back was not a definitive answer to a question, but a profound collection of portraits showcasing the unsung heroes of Cannes: the individuals who work tirelessly, the early risers preparing the city, the familiar faces serving the crowds, and the year-round residents who witness the grand spectacle, finding it, against all odds, truly wonderful. These are, in essence, the genuine stars of Cannes. On her final day, Berghorn's voice miraculously returned.
