Dedicated Pok￩mon enthusiasts have recently unveiled a documentary offering a rare glimpse into the developmental stages of the 2007 titles "Pok￩mon Diamond" and "Pok￩mon Pearl." This remarkable find has become a treasure trove for devoted fans, providing deep insights into Game Freak's process for conceptualizing starter Pok￩mon, showcasing preliminary designs for beloved characters, and surprisingly, revealing connections to contemporary Pok￩mon game elements. Remarkably, some concepts envisioned two decades ago by Game Freak are only now seeing the light of day with the release of "Pok￩mon Pokopia," and may even reappear in the forthcoming "Pok￩mon Winds" and "Waves" releases.

While reviewing the documentary, Lewtwo observed stacks of papers in the background adorned with various Pok￩mon designs. These sketches were not the primary focus of the original footage and thus were not fully visible. Furthermore, the video quality was limited to 480p. The archivists invested countless hours enhancing the contrast of these small sections of the video to discern even faint outlines of the Pok￩mon designs, a process Lewtwo described as "absolute hell." It was through this painstaking work that viewers were given a glimpse of an early design for Gastrodon, the sea slug Pok￩mon known for its regional variations. In "Pok￩mon Diamond" and "Pearl," players encountered brown Gastrodon from the West Sea and green variants from the East Sea. The fundamental concept for this creature was conceived by game director Junichi Masuda during the development of "Pok￩mon Ruby" and "Pok￩mon Sapphire," but it wasn't fully realized until five years later with the introduction of Shellos, which evolves into Gastrodon.

Intriguingly, Masuda's original vision for Gastrodon has not yet been fully implemented. The previously unseen design revealed in the documentary depicts a yellow Gastrodon, differing from the familiar brown or green versions. Although Shellos does not appear in "Pokopia," rumors abound that "Pok￩mon Winds" and "Waves" will introduce 300 new creatures. Many of these rumored additions are said to be regional variants, a concept that would perfectly suit Shellos. Additionally, it is known that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Pok￩mon games will feature 3D ocean exploration, an environment where sea slugs are commonly found in the real world. Thus, a quirky idea formulated two decades ago may finally come to fruition in "Pok￩mon Winds" and "Waves," slated for release exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2027.
