Ubisoft's blockchain-powered strategy game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, which only debuted this year, is slated for closure in October. This announcement, made via the game's official website and Discord channel, comes after the company had already begun phasing out its NFT features in May. The decision marks another chapter in Ubisoft's controversial foray into Web3 gaming, an initiative that has consistently met with skepticism and criticism from the gaming community. Despite previous assurances from Ubisoft's CEO that they would only pursue Web3 integration if it offered tangible benefits, the rapid demise of Champions Tactics suggests that such benefits were either elusive or failed to resonate with players.

The gaming giant confirmed the impending shutdown, stating that Champions Tactics servers would officially cease operation on October 30. Until that date, players are still able to engage with the game. This move follows a prior decision in May to "progressively transition away from blockchain functionality" within the game. This shift was attributed to changes in the underlying blockchain infrastructure. Consequently, the ability to mint and trade the game's NFT characters was disabled, some of which had been listed for exorbitant amounts shortly after the game's launch.

Previously, a significant matchmaking glitch plagued the game's initial weekend, forcing players into repetitive and frustrating encounters where they consistently lost to a single, unkillable opponent. This early stumble, coupled with a general lack of widespread engagement, meant that Champions Tactics largely remained outside public discourse, except for moments of technical failure or corporate missteps related to its controversial NFT integration.

The fate of Champions Tactics characters, once heralded as unique non-fungible tokens, ultimately mirrors the broader struggle of many blockchain-based gaming ventures. Once the Web3 components were stripped away, these digital assets reverted to being indistinguishable from conventional in-game items. For those dedicated players who reached the 'Divine rank' in previous seasons, Ubisoft has offered compensation in the form of in-game items for another of its titles, Might & Magic Fates. This title, a digital trading card game launched in February, also incorporates blockchain technology for its card trading system, indicating Ubisoft's continued, albeit troubled, commitment to the Web3 space.

The announcement has reignited debates within the game's community regarding the legitimacy and long-term viability of NFT-based gaming. While some players express disappointment, the overall sentiment seems to oscillate between disillusionment and a sense of vindication for those who had earlier voiced concerns about the project's direction. The quick closure of Champions Tactics serves as a potent reminder of the challenges and risks associated with integrating emerging technologies like NFTs into mainstream gaming, particularly when player value propositions remain unclear.
