The Tribeca Festival, in collaboration with AT&T, has commenced the submission period for its celebrated 'Untold Stories' filmmaker program. This marks a significant milestone as the initiative enters its tenth year, offering an unprecedented $1.2 million production grant to an aspiring director. This substantial award is recognized as the world's largest unrestricted prize for film production, demonstrating a profound commitment to nurturing new talent in the cinematic arts. The deadline for applications is set for January 18th.

Annually, the program selects five filmmaking teams to present their proposed projects during the Tribeca Festival. A single victorious team is then granted the full production funding along with continuous mentorship and comprehensive support from Tribeca Studios. This ensures not only the financial backing but also the creative guidance necessary to bring their vision to fruition. Furthermore, the winning film is guaranteed a premiere slot at the subsequent year's festival, providing a prominent platform for its debut. The next recipient of this prestigious award will be chosen at the 2027 Tribeca Festival, with their film scheduled to premiere in 2028.

Since its inception in 2017, the Untold Stories program has invested over $9.2 million in funding, backing more than 45 diverse projects and culminating in the production of eight feature films. Notable past winners, such as David Fortune's "Color Book," Lilian T. Mehrel's "Honeyjoon," and Liz Sargent's "Take Me Home," have achieved theatrical releases, highlighting the program's success in propelling emerging storytellers into the mainstream. Other acclaimed works include Faraday Okoro’s “Nigerian Prince” and Sasie Sealy’s “Lucky Grandma.”

This program is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of investing in fresh, diverse voices within independent cinema. It underscores the vital importance of supporting emerging artists in an industry that increasingly faces challenges, ensuring that innovative and compelling narratives continue to reach audiences worldwide. By empowering these filmmakers, Untold Stories not only fosters individual careers but also enriches the global tapestry of film, promoting a future where creativity and unique perspectives thrive.
