TGS, a prominent provider of energy data and intelligence, has entered into an agreement with the Ghana Petroleum Commission to initiate a groundbreaking offshore 2D-cubed seismic endeavor within the Keta Basin, situated off the coast of Ghana. This collaborative effort seeks to consolidate a wide array of subsurface information into a single, cohesive dataset for one of Africa's most promising yet largely unexplored regions.

This partnership is poised to significantly enhance the understanding of the Keta Basin's geological structures and resource potential. By leveraging advanced seismic technologies, the project will offer a comprehensive view of the subsurface, thereby supporting future exploration activities and fostering informed decision-making within the energy sector. The venture underscores the commitment of both TGS and Ghana to unlock the region's hydrocarbon resources responsibly and efficiently.

Advancing Subsurface Understanding in the Keta Basin

The initial phase of this ambitious project, known as the Gulf of Guinea 2D-cubed project, will meticulously integrate existing seismic data. This includes an impressive 5,500 square kilometers of 3D seismic information and over 14,700 kilometers of 2D surveys. This vast amount of information will serve as the foundational input for developing a detailed 2D-cubed seismic model, which is projected to cover an expansive area of 25,300 square kilometers across both the shelf and deepwater sections of the Keta Basin. The application of TGS' proprietary 2D-cubed methodology is critical here, as it enables the creation of a structurally consistent 3D seismic model by harmonizing diverse legacy 2D and 3D datasets. This process employs sophisticated interpolation techniques to bridge data gaps between survey lines and mitigate artifacts from older migration processes, ultimately yielding a smooth and continuous 3D dataset.

This innovative approach is specifically designed to equip explorers with a robust and unified perspective of the Keta Basin. The resulting high-quality 3D dataset will be instrumental in evaluating potential opportunities throughout the region, offering a clear and reliable view essential for confident action. David Hajosky, Executive Vice-President of Multi-Client at TGS, emphasized the Keta Basin's significant untapped potential and the necessity for such a clear, reliable view to facilitate informed decision-making. He highlighted that by consolidating decades of 2D and 3D data into a single 2D-cubed volume, explorers are provided with a ready-to-use foundation for prospect maturation. This initiative reflects TGS' ongoing dedication to delivering superior seismic data that not only identifies new resource potential but also supports the increasing exploration activities along the Transform Margin of West Africa. The final deliverables from this project are anticipated to be made available by the first quarter of 2027.

Strategic Implications for Regional Energy Exploration

The Keta Basin is recognized as home to one of Africa's most extensive underexplored deepwater fan systems, presenting considerable potential for new hydrocarbon discoveries. The primary objective of this project is to furnish explorers with a consistent and comprehensive understanding of the basin's subsurface geology. This unified perspective is crucial for efficiently assessing and screening various exploration opportunities without the immediate need for costly and time-consuming new 3D seismic acquisitions. By providing a consolidated view of the basin's complex geological features, the project aims to streamline the initial stages of exploration, making it more efficient and targeted. This strategic foresight can significantly reduce risks and optimize resource allocation for companies operating in the region, fostering a more attractive environment for investment.

This initiative also builds upon TGS' recent expansions in other key African regions. For instance, in November of the preceding year, TGS secured the rights to market and license geophysical data from offshore basins in the Comoros, an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean. This agreement was forged with the Gouvernement de L'Union des Comores and the Bureau Géologique des Comores, demonstrating TGS' broader strategy of enhancing geophysical data accessibility across various African maritime territories. Such strategic collaborations not only support the energy exploration efforts of individual nations but also contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the continent's overall energy landscape. The Keta Basin project, therefore, is a vital component of TGS' long-term commitment to advancing global energy exploration through cutting-edge data and intelligence solutions.
