While it is often considered uncouth to criticize the inherently uplifting series "Ted Lasso," the fourth season of the Apple TV+ dramedy, which maintains its signature optimistic tone, has left some viewers feeling a sense of unfulfilled potential. The show continues to emphasize kindness and an open-hearted approach, presenting a world where decency and grace are paramount. In an era often marked by cynicism, such a program should, in theory, offer solace and a reaffirmation of positive values, serving as a much-needed emotional comfort.

Despite the show's admirable intentions, the most recent installment has elicited a critical response, with some viewers expressing growing impatience. The season is characterized as well-meaning but ultimately lacking in substance. While not actively disliked, it follows a third season that was criticized for its meandering plot and excessive self-congratulation. The new showrunner has reportedly addressed some of these issues, with episodes being a more manageable length and the protagonist's demeanor shifting from almost saintly to merely very pleasant. Additionally, several male characters, apart from coach Roy Kent, have been written out, taking their undeveloped storylines with them.

However, the series, having shed some of its narrative clutter, now faces the challenge of filling the void with meaningful content. The current season sees Ted take charge of a new women's team, whose members, at this point, have not been given sufficient screen time to establish a strong presence. The most notable new addition is the assistant coach, Alice, whose distinct personality stands out against the show's prevalent positivity. The central conflict of the season revolves around the team's struggle against a sexist system, indifferent media, and a lack of resources, as Rebecca and Keeley champion their new venture. While this theme is timely and noble, the show is more successful at highlighting its importance than at making it consistently engaging. By keeping the players and fans somewhat detached, the narrative misses opportunities to explore personal stakes and the profound passion for the sport, leaving a desire for deeper character exploration.

The series continues to focus on its core ensemble, yet the three-year narrative gap has not led to significant shifts in the characters' lives, largely reverting them to a familiar state. Relationships, such as Beard and Jane's tumultuous dynamic, and Keeley and Roy's prolonged 'will-they-won't-they' dynamic, remain stagnant. Ted himself, portrayed with glimpses of underlying sadness by Jason Sudeikis, finds himself in a narrative cul-de-sac. The slow pacing of the season, exemplified by Ted's drawn-out decision-making process regarding the coaching role, highlights a broader issue: the show seems unsure of what to do with him when he's not delivering his characteristic inspirational speeches. Having already transformed those around him with his empathetic leadership, Ted, once an outsider, is now a legendary figure in a world he has reshaped, leaving him with no more adversities to conquer or skeptics to win over.
