Teaser Trailer for 'Yaga' Released, Starring Hudson Williams and Carrie-Anne Moss
The inaugural preview of the Canadian drama, 'Yaga,' has finally made its debut. This initial glimpse into the series was presented on Saturday during its panel discussion at San Diego Comic-Con. The half-hour mystery thriller, originating from the Canadian streaming service Crave and slated for broadcast on AMC+ in the United States, features an ensemble cast including Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, Clark Backo, and Hudson Williams. The creative team announced during the panel that 'Yaga' is expected to launch in October.
'Yaga' represents a significant undertaking for Williams, marking his first major endeavor since the successful queer hockey romance series, 'Heated Rivalry,' also a Crave original, garnered widespread attention late last year. Moss, Reid, and Backo attended the Comic-Con panel, alongside executive producer and showrunner Kat Sandler, where the teaser was first shown. Both Moss and Williams, though unable to be present in person, contributed video messages for the attendees.
Earlier in the week, Crave released initial images from the series, showcasing Moss and Williams in a near embrace, Backo and Reid seemingly pursuing an unknown entity, and Moss appearing both ethereal and unsettling amidst a wooded backdrop. A prominent billboard promoting the series was erected on a San Diego building in the days leading up to SDCC. Both AMC+ and Crave have also been actively promoting the show and its Comic-Con appearance across their social media platforms. The series is an adaptation of Sandler's play, with Sandler herself serving as both writer and showrunner. It offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the Baba Yaga legend, situated within a coastal community. Crave has distinguished the series as "not your grandmother's Baba Yaga" in a recent Instagram announcement. The narrative centers on Rapp, a private investigator portrayed by Reid, who journeys to a quaint coastal town to investigate the disappearance of Henry Park, played by Williams, the young heir to a powerful fishing enterprise. The official summary of the show describes Rapp as encountering "an uneasy local detective, Carson (Backo), a charismatic university professor with a penchant for younger men, Katherine (Moss), and a complex web of mysterious individuals, concealed existences, and ancient supernatural elements."
The creative force behind 'Yaga,' Kat Sandler, has expressed her satisfaction with the series' progression from a mythological concept to a theatrical production, and now to her first commissioned series. She highlights its focus on reclaiming the image of the "wicked witch," transforming her into a potent feminist figure for our contemporary society. Sandler describes the storytelling as compelling, approachable, dark, humorous, and boldly assertive. The cast also includes Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, Ezra Franky, Patrick Gilmore, Katharine Isabelle, and Hiro Kanagawa, alongside Emilija Baranac, Georgia Acken, Anisa Harris, and Sam Krochmal. The production of 'Yaga' is a collaboration between Front Street Pictures and Blink49 Studios, with Mackenzie Donaldson, Andrew Miller, and Moss serving as executive producers, and Charles Cooper as a producer. Sandler leads the series as showrunner, with directorial duties shared by David Frazee and Rachel Talalay.
