Swaybox Studio's Creative Team Votes for Union Representation

Employees at Swaybox Studios, currently engaged in the production of a high-profile animated feature within the Batman universe, have decisively opted for union membership under the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

The "Dynamic Duo" Project and Union Election Outcomes

Creatives involved in the "Dynamic Duo" film, which focuses on the early adventures of Batman's sidekicks, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, completed their unionization vote on Tuesday. The outcome revealed strong support for joining IATSE, with 84 votes cast in favor and 35 against. This decision encompasses 137 individuals, including animators, digital puppetry specialists, and CG modelers, pending any official challenges.

Innovative Animation Techniques and the Scope of Unionization

The film "Dynamic Duo" is notable for its innovative "Momo animation" method, a sophisticated combination of computer-generated imagery, stop-motion, and live-action puppetry. The unionization effort at Swaybox Studios, which is producing this $90 million budgeted film, marks one of IATSE's most substantial organizing campaigns within the film and television sector recently.

Motivations Behind the Union Drive

According to Simonette Berry, a business agent for IATSE Local 478, the primary catalyst for the organizing campaign stemmed from the workers' desire for a stronger voice in their workplace. They also aimed to achieve industry-standard wages, comprehensive benefits, and improvements in overall working conditions. Berry emphasized that this collective action demonstrates that studios operating in Louisiana to create top-tier films must meet fair labor standards.

Union's Call for Prompt Contract Negotiations

Mike Miller, IATSE International Vice President, urged Swaybox Studios to engage swiftly in contract negotiations with its newly unionized workforce. He stated that the workers' decision is clear and expects the studio, along with Warner Bros., to promptly agree to an industry-standard collective bargaining agreement.

Swaybox Studios' History and Current Projects

Established in 2014, Swaybox Studios has a diverse production history, including an NFL commercial and an earlier unreleased Catwoman project. Their current undertaking, "Dynamic Duo," brings them back to the Gotham City narrative, focusing on key moments in the lives of the first two Robins. The renowned director Matt Reeves' production company, 6th & Idaho, is also involved, further linking this project to the broader Batman cinematic universe, including the upcoming "The Batman Part II" slated for 2028.

Employee Perspectives on Unionization Benefits

Matthew Laird, a puppet generalist at the studio, articulated the positive impact of unionizing. He noted that as a company rapidly scales from a smaller operation to a large-budget film, employee concerns can often be overlooked. For him, unionization serves as a vital legitimizing force for Swaybox, ensuring that the talent and dedication of the crew are recognized and value
