A recent high-stakes theft at a Brazilian airport saw two pallets of highly sought-after RTX 5090 graphics cards vanish. Now, one of these purloined GPUs has reportedly surfaced on an online marketplace, priced at a significant $6,400. This development provides the first tangible lead in a case that has highlighted vulnerabilities in cargo security and the illicit trade of high-value electronics.

Stolen RTX 5090 Surfaces Online After Brazilian Airport Heist

In a significant development following the reported theft of two pallets of RTX 5090 graphics cards from a Brazilian airport, one of the stolen units has allegedly been discovered for sale on an online second-hand marketplace. The incident, which occurred on September 21, involved a coordinated effort by two outsourced forklift operators and a third airport employee who facilitated the movement of the valuable cargo past electronic security checkpoints.

Brazilian news outlet GMC Online, referencing Jornal da Band, reported that a stolen RTX 5090 appeared on OLX, a prominent platform for used goods. The listing reportedly featured a serial number matching one of the missing cards, with an asking price of R$32,000, equivalent to approximately $6,400 USD. This quick appearance on the secondary market suggests a rapid attempt to profit from the illicitly obtained hardware.

The shipment, belonging to Brazilian electronics distributor Oderço Group, was valued at R$2.5 million ($495,000) at cost. Oderço Matos, CEO of the Oderço Group, has publicly expressed his concern and called for greater accountability and clarification from authorities regarding the theft. Guarulhos International Airport has confirmed it notified the relevant authorities and is cooperating with the importer's representatives, indicating the investigation is now in the hands of law enforcement. The airport also advised on initiating the compensation process for the substantial loss.

The RTX 5090 graphics cards, known for their high demand and scarcity, represent a significant target for theft. While Nvidia's GeForce chief Jeff Fisher has affirmed that the ultra high-end consumer card remains in production, its limited availability makes such a large-scale theft particularly impactful. The challenge now lies in recovering the remaining GPUs and dismantling the network responsible for their distribution.

This incident underscores the persistent challenge of securing high-value cargo, especially for sought-after electronics. The rapid appearance of one of the stolen items on the open market highlights the agility of illicit networks and the immediate need for enhanced security measures at transit hubs. It also serves as a stark reminder for consumers to exercise caution when purchasing high-end electronics from unofficial channels, as such deals can inadvertently support criminal activities. The full recovery of the stolen shipment will undoubtedly be a complex task, but the identification of even a single unit offers a glimmer of hope for the affected company and law enforcement agencies.
