Henry James's renowned novel, 'The Portrait of a Lady,' is slated for a new adaptation as a six-part limited series, co-produced by Masterpiece on PBS and the BBC. The production boasts a distinguished ensemble, with Bill Nighy, Gemma Arterton, and Nell Tiger Free taking on pivotal roles. Free, known for her work in 'Game of Thrones,' will assume the lead as Isabel Archer, an American protagonist embarking on a journey of self-discovery in Europe.

The narrative centers on Isabel Archer, a spirited and independent young woman who rejects numerous marriage proposals. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she unexpectedly inherits a substantial fortune, which, while promising freedom, also makes her vulnerable to the machinations of two American expatriates: the enigmatic Madame Merle and the cunning Gilbert Osmond, portrayed by Arterton and Jim Sturgess, respectively. The cast is further enriched by Bill Nighy as Mr. Touchett and Miranda Richardson as Mrs. Touchett, Isabel's aunt and uncle, along with Jack Wolfe as Ralph Touchett, Calypso Cragg as Pansy Osmond, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Henrietta Stackpole, among others.

Directed by Aisling Walsh and adapted by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the series is currently filming in various international locations, including the U.K., Hungary, and Croatia. Produced by Number 9 Films TV and Masterpiece, in collaboration with FOX Entertainment Global, the adaptation aims to bring this timeless story to a new generation. Executive producers Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen expressed their excitement about the project, highlighting the novel's enduring relevance. While a release date is yet to be announced, the series is expected to premiere on Masterpiece on PBS, the PBS app, and PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video in the U.S. and Canada, followed by a rollout on BBC One and iPlayer in the U.K.

This ambitious adaptation reflects a commitment to reviving literary classics for contemporary audiences, showcasing a blend of artistic vision and historical resonance. The project underscores the universal themes of independence, betrayal, and self-discovery, inviting viewers to explore the complexities of human relationships and societal expectations through a fresh lens.
