The Tema Space Innovators ETF (NYSE:NASA), launched in March 2026, initially offered an exclusive opportunity to invest in SpaceX prior to its public offering, a unique selling proposition that quickly faded after SpaceX's June 2026 IPO at $135 per share. The immediate public availability of SpaceX shares removed the scarcity premium that defined the ETF, prompting investors to reconsider its role in their portfolios. Since the IPO, the NASA ETF has seen a significant downturn, dropping approximately 29% between June and August, mirroring the fluctuating performance of SpaceX's stock which dipped below its IPO price before recovering.

With its initial competitive edge gone, the ETF's holdings now present a diversified basket of space-related companies, with SpaceX accounting for roughly 7% of net assets, while Rocket Lab takes the lead at 11%. The fund's portfolio includes 38 other positions across various segments of the space industry, such as launch services (Rocket Lab, Firefly), satellite broadband (AST SpaceMobile, Viasat, Iridium), earth imaging (Planet Labs, BlackSky), and lunar/national security operations (Intuitive Machines). Many of these firms, though exhibiting substantial growth, are characterized by their small size, unprofitability, and reliance on government contracts, leading to inherent volatility in their earnings. The varied performance of these individual stocks, with some experiencing significant drops (e.g., Intuitive Machines down 50%, Firefly down 40%) while others gained (e.g., Viasat up 14%), highlights the challenge of single-stock selection in this sector.

For investors seeking broad exposure to the evolving space industry, the NASA ETF might still serve a purpose, despite its 0.75% expense ratio. This cost can be justified if an investor aims for a diversified sector basket, finds it difficult to replicate such a portfolio in a taxable brokerage account, or values the inclusion of international small-cap holdings that are cumbersome to acquire directly. However, those with a strong conviction specifically in SpaceX may find it more advantageous to invest directly in the company's stock, bypassing the ETF's fees. Ultimately, the decision depends on whether an investor desires a thematic exposure to the broader space sector, acknowledging the volatility of its growth-oriented, government-contract-dependent constituents, or prefers a targeted investment in a specific company.
