The market for high-grade Pokémon Trading Card Game cards is continually setting new records, but some collections distinguish themselves through their historical importance, rarity, and exceptional visual appeal. The English Southern Islands Promos from 2001 are a prime example, earning special recognition for these qualities.

Initially launched in Japan in 1999 alongside the second Pokémon film, the Southern Islands collection featured 18 cards divided into Tropical Island and Rainbow Island themes. These cards were notable for their ability to form larger panoramic scenes when arranged together. Naoyo Kimura and Keiko Fukuyama, renowned Pokémon TCG illustrators, contributed to the distinctive artwork of Tropical Island and Rainbow Island, respectively. When released in English by Wizards of the Coast in 2001, the entire 18-card set was presented in a decorative folder, maintaining the original, unique island art style and featuring striking holographic elements that enhanced their visual impact.

Recent auctions have underscored the immense value of these cards, with three specific graded Southern Islands cards achieving extraordinary prices. A PSA 10 Southern Islands Holo Mew #1 sold for an astonishing $840,000, reflecting its extreme rarity with only 20 such copies existing globally. The card's captivating art style by Keiko Fukuyama, featuring popular characters like Charizard, contributes significantly to its desirability. Additionally, a PSA 10 Southern Islands Holo Togepi #4 and a PSA 10 Southern Islands Holo Marill #11 each commanded $168,000. Fukuyama's artistic contributions, though fewer in number, are highly memorable, as seen in the Togepi card. The Marill card, illustrated by Naoyo Kimura, also boasts the signature "Reverse Cosmos Holo" foiling, a hallmark of the Southern Islands set. These sales, totaling nearly $1.2 million for just three cards, illustrate the profound appeal of this unique collection to passionate collectors.

The Southern Islands collection occupies a special place within the Pokémon TCG, distinct from booster-pack series. Its identity is forged by its curated nature, interconnected artwork, and a presentation unlike any other release from Wizards of the Coast. More than two decades on, these attributes have only grown in appeal. While Mew's impressive $840,000 sale captures much attention, the equally significant prices fetched by Togepi and Marill underscore the widespread and enduring desirability of the Southern Islands set. This convergence of beautiful art, an intriguing backstory, and dedicated collectors has propelled these relatively obscure, 25-year-old Pokémon cards to unprecedented auction success.
