Riot Games is preparing to release a nostalgic new version of its popular game, “League of Legends Classic,” on July 29, 2026. This initiative responds to persistent community requests for a return to the game’s earlier days. Executive Producer Paul Bellezza explained that the idea for “Classic” originated from an internal hackathon, known as Thunderdome, where a team successfully created a prototype based on the 2013, Season 3 version of the game. This prototype not only demonstrated the technical viability of revisiting older game assets but also confirmed that the experience remained enjoyable for players. The Season 3 framework was chosen because it served as a foundational period for the game’s development and resonated across various regions where the game launched at different times.

The development of “League of Legends Classic” has involved a dedicated team, initially comprising 45 members for the prototype phase and later stabilizing at around 25-30 full-time developers. This team includes veteran designers and engineers who bring deep knowledge of the game’s earlier iterations. Their focus is on ensuring a balanced and engaging experience, with plans to launch with 60 champions and allow the community to vote on future additions through a Classic Pass. Additionally, while aiming for a classic feel, the game will incorporate modern quality-of-life improvements, such as a reskinned user interface that blends classic visuals with contemporary functionality, and enhanced networking for smoother gameplay.

As "League of Legends" approaches its 17th anniversary, the introduction of “Classic” is seen as a celebratory event, appealing to long-time players, current enthusiasts, and new players alike. The goal is to provide diverse pathways for players to engage with the game, allowing them to choose the version that best suits their preferences. This venture into the game’s past is also viewed as a way to acknowledge the shared journey of players and developers, offering a unique opportunity to reflect on the game’s evolution before looking ahead to its future developments in 2027.

This endeavor by Riot Games to reintroduce “League of Legends Classic” highlights the enduring power of community feedback and the value of honoring a game’s heritage. By meticulously recreating an earlier era while integrating modern technical advancements, Riot demonstrates a commitment to both nostalgia and player experience. This strategic move could foster a renewed sense of community and appreciation for the game's legacy, proving that sometimes, looking back can pave the way for a brighter future.
