Ludeon Studios, the developer behind the beloved colony simulation game RimWorld, has announced a significant technological leap for their title. The game is moving from its previous Unity engine foundation to a proprietary in-house engine named Waylith. This change, arriving with the 1.7 update, promises substantial enhancements in game performance, including dramatically faster load times and smoother operation, while ensuring continuity for players' existing save files and most modifications.

This strategic shift comes as Ludeon Studios seeks to optimize RimWorld’s performance, a crucial factor for a game known for its complex simulations and potential for extensive modding. The new Waylith Engine, developed entirely by Ludeon Studios, aims to address the growing demands of late-game colonies and large mod packs. Early internal tests indicate a performance boost of 2 to 4 times, a remarkable improvement that will be welcomed by the game’s dedicated community.

The transition to the Waylith Engine is already accessible to players on the unstable beta branch of the 1.7 update. Initial feedback from the player base has been overwhelmingly positive, corroborating Ludeon's claims. For instance, one player reported a stable 120 frames per second and 900 ticks per second (TPS) on the new engine, a significant upgrade from their previous 60 FPS/700 TPS at maximum speed. Another impressive demonstration involved a mod pack containing 1,477 modifications, which saw its loading time reduced from over 30 minutes to just over six minutes on the Waylith Engine. While the new engine does consume more RAM, with some users observing 12-13 GB usage at startup, the performance gains appear to outweigh this concern for many.

A key achievement of this engine migration is the preservation of game continuity. Players’ existing 1.6 save files are fully compatible with the 1.7 update, and surprisingly, saves created in 1.7 can even be used when reverting to version 1.6. Furthermore, the vast majority of community-created mods also function seamlessly with the new engine, alleviating fears of widespread incompatibility often associated with such major technical overhauls. This careful consideration for player experience underscores Ludeon Studios’ commitment to its community. Adding to the excitement, Ludeon Studios subtly hinted at future projects, revealing that RimWorld isn't the only game utilizing the Waylith Engine, and that they are actively developing something new, with more details to follow.

The successful integration of the Waylith Engine marks a pivotal moment for RimWorld, pushing the boundaries of what's possible within the game's intricate simulation framework. Players can now enjoy a more fluid and responsive experience, particularly in scenarios with high complexity and numerous custom additions. This move not only enhances the current game but also lays a robust foundation for Ludeon Studios' future endeavors, demonstrating their innovative spirit and dedication to their craft.
