Refactor Games Lays Off 85% of Staff After FIFA World Cup Game Launch

Refactor Games, the development studio behind the "FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition" title, which debuted exclusively on Netflix a mere two months prior, has unfortunately implemented significant workforce reductions, impacting 85% of its employees. This development was corroborated by Nathan Burba, the head of the studio, in a statement to GamesBeat, while an Insider Gaming report further indicated that Delphi Interactive, the game's publisher, ceased its financial support for the studio's operations.

This information finds further support in the public statement made by Barclay Chantel, a former art director at Refactor Games. Chantel utilized LinkedIn to announce their renewed search for employment, directly attributing the studio's closure to Delphi's withdrawal of support immediately following the launch of the FIFA World Cup game. Chantel's post explicitly stated that the entire studio staff was let go, urging those seeking talent to reach out for recommendations.

Before the release of "FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition," Refactor Games had developed "Football Simulator," an early access title available on Steam that focused on American football. Despite achieving a largely positive reception from users, as documented on SteamDB, its peak concurrent player count in January 2025 only reached 188. At the time of this report, the game's maximum concurrent players over the past 24 hours stood at a modest 10.

Conversely, "FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition" initially demonstrated considerable player engagement, attracting 1.5 million players within its inaugural week, according to Game File. Netflix's second-quarter fiscal report for 2026 even cited it as one of the platform's two most successful cloud game launches. However, its critical reception was markedly different, with Aftermath describing the game as a "modern hellscape" and an "embarrassment."

Considerable anticipation surrounded "FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition," primarily because it marked the first FIFA-branded video game to be developed since the global soccer organization severed its ties with long-time publisher EA Sports. Nevertheless, a healthy dose of skepticism also permeated the industry, with many questioning whether the new game could achieve even a fraction of the success enjoyed by previous FIFA titles under EA's stewardship. Unfortunately, it appears that these reservations were, in hindsight, well-founded.

This situation underscores the inherent risks and unpredictable nature of the video game industry. Despite initial promising player metrics and a high-profile platform like Netflix, the ultimate fate of a game, and consequently its development studio, often hinges on sustained critical and commercial success, as well as the continued backing of its publishers. The rapid downturn experienced by Refactor Games serves as a stark reminder of these industry realities.
