Raindance, a prominent independent film organization, is pioneering the United Kingdom's inaugural significant festival and market for vertical media. This strategic move aims to propel the nation's engagement with short-form vertical content, a format that has witnessed substantial growth and is projected to generate considerable revenue globally. The initiative seeks to provide a dedicated platform for creators and industry professionals within this emerging sector.

The Raindance Vertical event is scheduled to take place on December 4th at the Karma Sanctum Hotel in London. This timing is deliberately positioned between two other key industry events, Content London and the British Independent Film Awards, to maximize participation and industry interest. The festival will feature two competitive categories: Vertical Short Film and Vertical Series. Submissions for these categories commenced recently via FilmFreeway, welcoming both UK and international filmmakers to showcase their work.

Elliot Grove, the founder of Raindance, emphasized the necessity for the British film industry to embrace new screen formats and seriously consider the content being produced for them. He articulated that the original mission of Raindance was to create opportunities for filmmakers where traditional avenues were lacking. Raindance Vertical continues this legacy by focusing on discovering new talent, validating their work, and facilitating connections between these filmmakers and potential financiers for their future projects.

Beyond the competitive elements, the festival's program includes a series of panels and workshops designed to educate and inspire participants. A crucial component of the event is the establishment of a 'vertical mini-market,' organized in collaboration with Charlotte Knowles' Creative HQ. This market is designed to bring together pre-vetted producers with a diverse array of industry stakeholders, including financiers, streaming platforms, commissioners, and brands, thereby fostering potential collaborations and investment opportunities.

Raindance acknowledges that despite a wealth of professional-standard vertical content being produced by UK filmmakers, there are currently limited channels for them to access the necessary backing from financiers, studios, streamers, and brands. The festival and market are specifically tailored to bridge this gap, offering a vital conduit for these creators to secure support and expand their reach.

The advisory group for the Raindance Vertical festival comprises notable figures in the industry, such as director Dan Löwenstein, founder of House of Create; Jen Cooper of Vertical Drama Love, who serves as a vertical drama critic and consultant; and Christine Hartland, co-founder and chief operating officer of My Smash Media. Their collective expertise will guide the festival's development and impact.

Dan Löwenstein, with extensive experience directing numerous vertical dramas for various platforms, commented on the format's unique characteristics. He noted that vertical filmmaking demands the same directorial discipline, technical crews, and narrative rigor as traditional filmmaking, but within a distinct structural and temporal framework. Löwenstein highlighted the format's rapid pace, data-driven nature, and often budget-conscious approach, which he believes fosters genuine innovation. He expressed enthusiasm for the festival as an opportunity to present the finest UK and international vertical dramas alongside established feature films and shorts, and anticipates the creative contributions from the UK filmmaking community to this evolving medium.

The entirety of the Raindance Vertical program will unfold over a single day, with all featured works presented in the 9:16 aspect ratio. This focused approach ensures a cohesive and immersive experience for attendees, spotlighting the unique storytelling possibilities of vertical media. The festival marks a significant step in acknowledging and nurturing the growth of this dynamic content form in the UK and beyond.
