Quantic Dream's workforce has initiated industrial action in response to impending job cuts, expressing deep concerns that the ongoing development of the highly anticipated narrative game, Star Wars Eclipse, faces an insurmountable hurdle if these planned redundancies proceed. The studio's recent multiplayer title, Spellcasters Chronicles, experienced a commercial failure, leading to its removal from service and prompting the decision to reduce staff numbers.

Quantic Dream Staff Protest Layoffs Amidst Star Wars Eclipse Development Concerns

In a significant turn of events for the gaming industry, developers at Quantic Dream, renowned for their critically acclaimed titles such as Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, have staged a strike. This protest comes in direct opposition to the studio's proposal to lay off 115 employees. The striking workers have voiced a stark warning: the ambitious Star Wars Eclipse project, first unveiled at The Game Awards 2021, cannot be successfully completed under such circumstances.

The catalyst for these proposed layoffs appears to be the recent commercial disappointment of Quantic Dream's MOBA, Spellcasters Chronicles. Launched in February 2026, the game quickly failed to gain traction and was subsequently taken offline earlier this month. Following this setback, reports emerged detailing the studio's intention to reduce its workforce by over a hundred individuals.

The strike intensified last week when representatives from Lucasfilm, partners in the Star Wars Eclipse venture, arrived for a progress review. Developers on strike conveyed to Gamekult, with translations reported by Kotaku, that proceeding with the dismissal of such a substantial number of experienced staff would render the completion of the Star Wars title an impossibility.

One developer, identified as Theo, stated candidly that under the current redundancy scheme, the game's completion is genuinely in doubt. Another, Jules, emphasized that their actions were not a form of sabotage but a desperate plea for adequate staffing. Jules argued that integrating the 115 threatened positions into the Star Wars team would not lead to overstaffing, but rather address an existing understaffing issue crucial for the project's success. These statements hint at a significant delay in the game's progress, despite its announcement nearly five years ago.

The striking developers firmly believe that by retaining and reallocating these 115 individuals to the Star Wars Eclipse team, the game's development would be significantly strengthened. This move, they argue, would also alleviate immense pressure and the risk of 'crunch' for the remaining smaller team, ensuring a more sustainable development cycle.

Neither Quantic Dream nor Lucasfilm has yet issued an official comment regarding the ongoing strike. The studio's most recent public statement on Star Wars Eclipse, made during the announcement of Spellcasters Chronicles' discontinuation and the impending layoffs, asserted that the development of the Star Wars title would continue "as planned," unaffected by these internal decisions.

This situation at Quantic Dream highlights a critical tension within the game development industry: the balance between business viability and creative integrity. The developers' stand underscores a profound commitment to their craft and the quality of the final product, particularly when a beloved franchise like Star Wars is involved. It raises important questions about the human cost of project failures and the responsibility of studios to their talent. This incident serves as a poignant reminder that the success of complex creative endeavors often hinges not just on financial backing and strategic planning, but on the sustained morale and collective expertise of the people behind the scenes.
