Pimax has introduced a new compact computing device, the Spation mini PC, which echoes the design philosophy of Valve's Steam Machine while offering substantially enhanced hardware capabilities. This innovative product is poised to provide a high-performance gaming experience, especially for virtual reality applications, within a space-saving footprint. It supports both the Windows operating system and Valve's Linux-based SteamOS, offering versatility to users.

The Spation mini PC is engineered with considerable processing and graphics power. According to Pimax, the system can be configured with either an RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti graphics processing unit, paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D central processing unit. These components are complemented by 32 GB of DDR5 memory and a 1 TB solid-state drive, all powered by a 1000 W SFX power supply. Connectivity options are extensive, featuring Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, two DisplayPort 2.1 ports, one HDMI 2.1 port, one USB4 port, and six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, ensuring a comprehensive range of peripheral and display connections.

The internal layout of the Spation is ingeniously designed, particularly evident when viewing the render of the device with its rear panel removed. It reveals what appears to be a Mini-ITX motherboard accommodating two DIMM modules, with a clever arrangement for the rear input/output ports. Above this, the power supply is situated, with a fan for cooling. The graphics card is mounted flat on the opposite side, connected via a PCIe riser cable. A primary concern for such a compact high-performance system is thermal management, specifically how effectively the graphics card dissipates heat within the enclosed chassis. However, the front panel, which is designed to be removable and includes ventilation, suggests that Pimax has considered airflow and cooling to some extent, potentially with additional internal fans.

Pimax intends to offer the Spation as a barebones kit, allowing users to customize their system by installing their preferred graphics card, storage, and memory. This modular approach indicates a degree of standardization in component selection. The Spation's market niche lies in offering a more powerful alternative to gaming laptops for high-end PC VR, in a more compact form factor than typical desktop PCs. While building a custom Mini-ITX gaming PC remains an option, the Spation seeks to fill a gap, especially given that the original Steam Machine has faced challenges with VR due to its Arch-based SteamOS. Pimax is promoting the Spation with support for both Windows and SteamOS. Although it functions as a standard PC, allowing for custom operating system installations, the choice between Windows and SteamOS will likely depend on the user's primary use case, particularly for VR. Despite advancements in Linux-based VR and Pimax's plans to bring Pimax Play to Linux, Windows generally offers a more straightforward VR experience.

In essence, the Pimax Spation stands as a formidable entry into the mini PC market, aiming to deliver robust gaming and VR capabilities within a streamlined design. Its powerful specifications, flexible operating system support, and thoughtful internal design position it as an appealing choice for gamers and VR enthusiasts seeking a compact yet high-performing machine for their living room entertainment setups. The device's commitment to both Windows and SteamOS underscores its adaptability, while the barebones kit option provides users with customization potential. The attention to detail in its engineering, particularly in balancing power with compact size and thermal considerations, highlights its potential to carve out a significant presence in the evolving landscape of gaming hardware.
