Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Star in New Disney+ Series
After more than two decades since Disney reclaimed the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character predating Mickey Mouse, significant new content featuring him is finally on the horizon. During the recent D23 showcase, Jon Favreau revealed plans for an Oswald miniseries scheduled to debut on Disney+ in February 2027, an announcement that garnered less attention than some of the other major reveals.
Originally conceived by Walt Disney, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit's rights were not initially owned by Disney, leading to his eventual abandonment and fading into obscurity. This paved the way for Mickey Mouse, whose ownership was fully retained by Disney, to become the company's iconic emblem. In 2006, Disney orchestrated a trade with NBCUniversal, exchanging ESPN sportscaster Al Michaels to regain ownership of Oswald. The strategic intent behind reacquiring Oswald became more apparent a few years later with his prominent role in "Epic Mickey," a Wii game featuring Mickey Mouse navigating realms populated by forgotten Disney figures. Oswald subsequently appeared in the game's sequel and a 2024 remaster, though his presence in other Disney Animation endeavors has largely been restricted to brief cameos or allusions. Now, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is poised to headline his exclusive miniseries.
The upcoming three-part miniseries, titled "Oswald," will seamlessly blend live-action and animated elements, mirroring the style of productions like "Coyote vs. Acme." In this new narrative, Oswald finds himself transported into the human world following an earthquake, where he forms an unexpected bond with a group of middle school children who assist him in navigating a reality he hasn't encountered in a century. Jon Favreau, acclaimed for his directorial work on the initial two Iron Man installments, "Elf," and "The Mandalorian and Grogu," spearheaded the project as writer, co-director, and producer. The confirmed cast includes notable talent such as Kathryn Hahn, alongside Ryder Allen, Albert Brooks, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Al Madrigal. The series is slated to premiere on Disney+ on February 17, 2027, nearly a century after the character's inaugural appearance in the animated short "Trolley Troubles." Meanwhile, "Epic Mickey Rebrushed" is scheduled for release on iOS and Android on September 16, and on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 6.
