Nvidia's AI Ambition Faces Memory Shortage Despite Soaring Revenue

Nvidia, a leading force in graphics processing units and artificial intelligence hardware, recently held its earnings call, revealing a projected 70% revenue increase for the 2028 fiscal year. However, CEO Jensen Huang acknowledged this figure is a conservative estimate, primarily constrained by a pervasive memory shortage, a crisis paradoxically worsened by Nvidia's escalating AI endeavors.

During the recent financial disclosure, CEO Jensen Huang addressed inquiries regarding the 70% revenue projection, confirming its conservative nature. He explicitly attributed this cautious forecast to the current scarcity of available memory in the market, a situation which he noted is significantly impacting the company's potential for even higher growth. Huang emphasized that an unconstrained scenario would yield substantially greater returns, pointing to the company's 100% year-over-year growth as an indicator of underlying demand. He underscored Nvidia's commitment to overcoming these supply challenges, highlighting their robust supply chain and strong partnerships as key assets in their efforts to secure increased capacity to meet demand.

Nvidia's latest financial data paints a compelling picture of its revenue streams, with the data center segment now dominating earnings. The company recorded an impressive $96.2 billion in the most recent quarter, achieving a gross margin of 75%. A substantial $89 billion of this revenue was generated by data centers, marking a remarkable 117% increase from the previous year. Curiously, Nvidia's financial reports do not separate gaming revenue, instead lumping it into a broader category labeled 'Edge Computing.' This category encompasses a range of activities including gaming, workstations, physical AI PCs, and robotics. 'Edge Computing' contributed $7.1 billion to the quarter's earnings, representing a 27% year-over-year jump. This highlights a strategic shift within Nvidia, where the burgeoning AI market is becoming an increasingly central focus, influencing not only their product development but also their revenue reporting structures.

The company further noted that while Blackwell workstation sales drove increases in Edge Computing, consumer PC sales experienced a slowdown. This deceleration was directly linked to elevated memory and system prices, a clear ripple effect of the ongoing memory crisis. The current market dynamics are also reflected in GPU sales, with AMD's RX 9070 XT and 9060 XT currently leading Amazon and Mindfactory's sales charts. The precise reasons behind this shift—whether it's pricing strategies, stock availability, or a combination of factors—remain to be fully determined. Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang also addressed investor concerns regarding gross margins, confirming that the company is grappling with "extreme pricing conditions in memory." He explicitly stated that the magnitude of these price increases has surpassed initial expectations and is projected to climb even higher into the next year. Despite these challenges, Huang reaffirmed Nvidia's robust supply chain and strong partnerships as crucial for securing necessary supplies, albeit acknowledging the need for significantly more capacity to meet demand. This underscores the widespread impact of the memory crisis, a challenge that even industry giants like Samsung have warned will continue to be severe in the coming year, highlighting the complex interplay between AI demand and global component availability.
