Nissan is reportedly gearing up to introduce an additional iteration of its popular Pathfinder SUV, one that will feature a robust body-on-frame construction. This new model is anticipated to boast a more angular aesthetic and superior ruggedness when compared to the current unibody design. Initial offerings are expected to include a traditional internal combustion engine, with a hybrid powertrain becoming available at a later date. Industry sources indicate that this tougher Pathfinder could debut as early as 2029.

According to insights from individuals familiar with the company's strategy, Nissan intends to market both the existing unibody Pathfinder and this new body-on-frame version simultaneously for an unspecified period. Production for this new variant is slated for Nissan's Mississippi manufacturing facility. Furthermore, this upcoming SUV will reportedly utilize the same chassis as the re-emerging Xterra model, highlighting a shared engineering foundation. Positioned as a more upscale selection, this heavy-duty Pathfinder will likely carry a distinct price point, differentiating it from the current model, which starts around $41,395 for the 2026 iteration. Given its enhanced features, it is reasonable to expect the new variant's cost to be higher upon its release.

The introduction of a rugged Pathfinder alongside the revived Xterra, both sharing a significant percentage of components, signals Nissan's strategic move to broaden its SUV appeal. This approach underscores a commitment to offering diverse options that cater to varying consumer preferences, from urban comfort to off-road adventure. Such a dual strategy demonstrates the brand's adaptability and willingness to innovate within established product lines, reinforcing its competitive stance in the automotive market.
