Nintendo is set to implement significant changes to its Switch console lineup, including the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models, in response to new European battery regulations. These changes, primarily focused on user-replaceable batteries, will affect product availability and design, with a global impact expected.

Adapting to the Future: Nintendo's Regulatory Response and Product Evolution

End of an Era: Original Switch Production Halts in Europe

Nintendo has disclosed plans to discontinue the production of its current Switch consoles—the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED—in Europe, effective from mid-February 2027. This announcement, initially found in a support document's FAQ section, signals a broader shift that is likely to extend beyond Europe, affecting global markets in due course.

Regulatory Impetus: European Battery Legislation

The driving force behind Nintendo's decision is new European legislation that mandates consumer electronic devices, including portable consoles, to feature easily removable and user-replaceable batteries. Nintendo is proactively aligning its product portfolio with these requirements, impacting not only the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console but also its accessories, such as the Pro controller and Joy-Cons for both current and future Switch models, as well as N64 and GameCube controllers designed for the Switch 2.

Rolling Out the Changes: New Models and Availability

Nintendo's official statement confirms that, beginning in summer 2026, revised versions of select products incorporating user-replaceable batteries will gradually be introduced in Europe. This phased rollout will continue through autumn, winter, and early 2027, ensuring a smooth transition. The company has emphasized that these new revisions will offer identical functionality to their predecessors, with the primary distinction being compliance with the new battery regulations.

Minor Trade-offs: Weight and Battery Capacity Adjustments

While the new regulations bring long-term benefits, they do introduce minor changes to the devices themselves. The Nintendo Switch 2 console, for instance, is projected to be approximately 10 grams heavier (14 grams with attached Joy-Cons), accompanied by a slight 1% reduction in battery capacity. Similarly, the Switch 2 Pro controller will see its battery capacity decrease by 16% but will become 7 grams lighter. Despite these adjustments, the core functionality of all listed products remains unchanged, ensuring a consistent user experience.

Accessibility for European Consumers: When and Where to Find New Models

For consumers in Europe, detailed information regarding the availability of these revised products, including specific release windows for items like the new Switch 2 console with a replaceable battery (expected in autumn), will be provided. Nintendo's support documentation will serve as a comprehensive guide for those looking to acquire the updated models, though availability may vary by country.
