Netflix's 'Wonka' Reality Show Trailer Features AI-Recreated Gene Wilder Voice

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for a new reality competition series inspired by the classic film, 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.' This nine-episode unscripted show, titled 'Wonka's The Golden Ticket,' challenges contestants within a vibrant factory setting, engaging them in various tasks drawn from Roald Dahl's renowned novel. The series, a result of Netflix's acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021, aims to bring the whimsical world of Wonka to life.

A notable aspect of the new series is the use of an AI-generated voice of the late actor Gene Wilder, who famously portrayed Willy Wonka in the 1971 movie. This decision, made with permission from Wilder's estate and in collaboration with AI company ElevenLabs, has generated discussions regarding its appropriateness. While some might find the re-creation unsettling, Gene Wilder's widow, Karen B. Wilder, expressed her delight, stating that the show celebrates the humor, wonder, and heart her husband brought to the role, introducing his magic to a new generation while honoring long-time fans. Additionally, Rusty Goffe, who played an Oompa Loompa in the original film, will also be featured in 'The Golden Ticket,' which is set to premiere on September 23.
