Neon, a prominent film distributor, has announced its plans to develop an anthology movie inspired by the widely recognized online horror platform, The SCP Foundation. This cinematic endeavor, slated for release in 2027, aims to provide a spotlight for new and upcoming directors, fostering fresh talent within the industry.

The SCP Wiki, established in 2008, functions as a collaborative speculative fiction hub where contributors craft narratives that expand upon the intricate universe of the SCP Foundation. This clandestine organization is dedicated to cataloging and researching anomalous objects and entities, often possessing supernatural or perilous characteristics, for the protection of humanity. Notable entries within this lore include SCP-173, a sentient concrete sculpture that attacks upon broken eye contact, and SCP-682, an incredibly resilient and intelligent reptile capable of rapid adaptation and regeneration.

In a move that underscores its commitment to the source material's community, Neon emphasized that the film will be released under the Creative Commons license CC BY-SA. The studio has also confirmed direct communication with the SCP Wiki team throughout the adaptation process. This proactive engagement follows a previous incident where the SCP Wiki team publicly disavowed a separate film project from A24, Spooky Pictures, and Image Nation, citing a lack of consultation and clarification regarding intellectual property rights. The SCP team had previously stated that A24 did not possess exclusive rights to any SCP Foundation-related content, including potential film adaptations.

The entertainment industry has witnessed a growing trend of transforming internet-native intellectual property into successful cinematic ventures, largely spurred by the impressive box office performance of A24's "Backrooms." Based on a web series by then 21-year-old Kane Parsons, who also wrote and directed the film, "Backrooms" garnered over $400 million against a modest $10 million budget. This success has paved the way for other online horror phenomena, such as Trevor Henderson's viral creation Siren Head, which Warner Bros. secured for a film adaptation with Brian Duffield directing and Zach Cregger writing. TriStar Pictures also acquired rights to Henderson's Cartoon Cat for a movie, further solidifying the industry's interest in community-generated digital content. This trend highlights the increasing recognition of collaborative online storytelling as a fertile ground for engaging and profitable film productions, provided that proper licensing and community engagement are maintained.
