MS NOW, a prominent left-leaning news organization, is embarking on a significant strategic shift by introducing a new membership tier. This initiative aims to cultivate deeper connections with its audience and establish diverse revenue streams beyond conventional cable subscriptions. The move reflects a broader industry trend where news outlets are seeking to build robust direct-to-consumer relationships.

MS NOW Unveils Membership Expansion on August 19, 2026

On August 19, 2026, MS NOW announced a pivotal development in its business model: the launch of a new membership tier designed to enhance subscriber engagement and diversify its financial foundation. Rebecca Kutler, the channel's chief, detailed this strategic move in an internal memo, emphasizing it as a foundational step in a long-term plan to strengthen audience relationships.

This new subscription option, priced at $7.99 per month or $79.99 annually, is scheduled to commence on September 9. The decision follows a year of extensive research, including 18,000 survey responses and numerous one-on-one discussions with consumers, coupled with iterative product and concept testing. The focus is clearly on catering to both dedicated followers, termed "super fans," and attracting new viewers, or "future fans."

The membership package promises a wealth of exclusive benefits. Subscribers will gain access to unique community features, fostering direct interaction among viewers. The offering also includes a fresh lineup of expert contributors, original creator content, and new thematic verticals that delve into the intersection of current events and daily life. Critically, members will enjoy round-the-clock access to live streams and all television programming.

This initiative represents a strategic pivot for MS NOW, moving beyond reliance on cable carriage fees. The organization has been actively exploring various direct-to-consumer avenues, including expanding its live events and podcast offerings. The channel has also revitalized its programming schedule and forged content partnerships, such as with Crooked Media, to broaden its appeal. Recent performance metrics highlight its digital growth, with YouTube viewership and podcast downloads, reaching 11 million in June, serving as key indicators of its expanding reach.

In a notable move to connect with a wider audience, MS NOW is extending its presence into politically diverse regions. On September 26, the channel will host "MS NOW Live: Together In Texas," a forum featuring prominent personalities like Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell, Jen Psaki, Stephanie Ruhle, Ali Velshi, and Chris Hayes. This event underscores the channel's commitment to engaging in broader dialogues. This year, MS NOW also marked its 30th anniversary, tracing its origins back to NBC's collaboration with Microsoft in 1996 to form MSNBC.

Data from Comscore indicates that the typical MS NOW viewer spends approximately nine hours per week engaging with its programming. While the traditional linear television audience tends to be older, the channel highlights that its digital and TV viewership bases exhibit less than a 10 percent overlap, suggesting a successful expansion into diverse demographic segments.

Other major news networks, such as Fox News and CNN, have already ventured into the subscription market. Fox Nation, launched in 2018, now boasts two million subscribers with an $8.99 monthly fee. CNN's subscription tier is priced at $6.99 per month. Even NBC News, MS NOW's former corporate affiliate, has recently adopted a paywall model with a $5.99 monthly plan.

Versant CEO Mark Lazarus has been a staunch advocate for this direct-to-consumer approach, not only for MS NOW but also for its sister business network, CNBC. Lazarus emphasized during an earnings call on August 6 that these new offerings are more than just streaming services; they are comprehensive direct-to-consumer products designed to provide engaged audiences with content that goes beyond simple replication of television programming.

Kutler further elaborated in her memo that becoming part of Versant has provided MS NOW with unprecedented opportunities to invest in its growth and innovation, enabling strategies that were previously unattainable.

The introduction of new membership tiers by MS NOW is a fascinating case study in the evolving media landscape. It highlights the imperative for traditional news organizations to innovate and diversify their revenue models. By focusing on exclusive content, community building, and catering to both loyal and prospective audiences, MS NOW is attempting to solidify its future in an increasingly fragmented and competitive market. This strategy underscores the value of direct audience relationships and the potential for news outlets to thrive by offering more personalized and comprehensive experiences beyond conventional broadcasting. It will be interesting to observe how this model performs and whether it sets a precedent for other news channels to follow suit.
