Microdrama viewership has seen an astonishing 28-fold increase over the past two years, attracting a diverse audience that now includes a significant male demographic. A recent comprehensive study by Holywater and Owl & Co. delves into the evolving landscape of this burgeoning vertical media, revealing key trends in content consumption, audience demographics, and viewing habits. The findings highlight that romance narratives are overwhelmingly popular across both male and female viewers, and Sunday evenings consistently emerge as the peak viewing period, mirroring traditional television consumption patterns. This in-depth analysis offers valuable insights into the growth trajectory and future potential of microdramas.

This research underscores the rapid expansion of vertical media, showcasing its integration into daily life and its unique competitive positioning against other forms of digital entertainment. The study’s revelations about audience engagement, particularly the acceptance of AI-generated content, challenge conventional assumptions and provide a fresh perspective on consumer preferences in the digital age. By opening its extensive user data from My Drama and My Muse apps, Holywater, in collaboration with Owl & Co., has provided an unparalleled look into the dynamics driving this fast-growing media format.

The Explosive Growth of Microdrama and Its Diverse Audience

Microdrama viewership has experienced an unprecedented surge, growing by a staggering 28 times in just two years. This remarkable expansion has brought a significant shift in audience demographics, with men now constituting a substantial portion of viewers. Contrary to earlier perceptions of microdramas appealing primarily to a specific female demographic, the study reveals that over two-thirds of users, irrespective of gender, are drawn to romance-centric series. This broad appeal indicates a versatile and rapidly expanding market. Furthermore, mirroring established television viewing habits, microdrama consumption typically reaches its peak on Sunday nights, between 8 PM and 10 PM, suggesting a habitual integration into users' weekly routines. This growth and evolving demographic profile were comprehensively detailed in a recent report, highlighting the dynamic nature of this vertical media.

The comprehensive report, titled “The State of Microdrama,” was jointly released by vertical media giant Holywater and the analytical firm Owl & Co. To facilitate this in-depth analysis, Holywater granted Owl & Co. access to the extensive user data from its popular microdrama applications, My Drama and My Muse. This collaboration allowed for a thorough examination of the medium’s explosive growth and audience engagement patterns. The study’s findings challenge preconceived notions, revealing that the microdrama audience is younger, more diverse, and more deeply involved than previously believed. Importantly, this audience demonstrates a surprising openness to AI-generated content, a trend that contrasts sharply with broader cultural discussions surrounding artificial intelligence in media. This acceptance of AI content, coupled with high daily engagement and strong retention rates for both live-action and AI-generated titles, signifies a new frontier in digital entertainment consumption.

Understanding Microdrama Consumption Patterns and Future Trends

The study highlights that microdramas have carved out a unique niche in daily media consumption, largely filling “in-between moments” rather than directly competing with traditional television. Users frequently engage with these short-form narratives during commutes, while waiting in lines, or even during household chores, positioning microdramas as an alternative to casual social media scrolling. A significant portion of viewers, approximately 70%, also incorporate microdramas into their pre-sleep routines, while 59% enjoy them as a relaxed activity on the couch. Additionally, 35% use them during meal or work breaks, and a notable 22% watch while in the restroom. These diverse viewing contexts underscore the adaptability and pervasive nature of microdramas in modern lifestyles, indicating a substantial shift in how content is consumed.

The report also reveals several other compelling statistics regarding microdrama consumption and market trends. The vertical media market, excluding China, is projected to reach an impressive $4 billion by 2026, with China’s market already exceeding $15 billion in 2025. Holywater’s male user base has seen a dramatic increase, rising from 1.1% in late 2024 to 30.3% in the most recent quarter. While male users generally watch less per individual, they show a stronger preference for sci-fi and fantasy genres (1.4 times the average) and are less responsive to adapted intellectual property. They also discover content more frequently through YouTube and app store searches. Romance remains the dominant genre, accounting for 76% of female viewing and 54% of male viewing, with comedy, action, sci-fi, and thrillers following for men. The market is characterized by new users, with 65% having watched for less than a year and 31% starting within the last three months, emphasizing the format's rapid adoption. Loyalty is not exclusive to a single app, as over 60% of Holywater subscribers use three or more apps weekly, indicating a fragmented yet highly engaged user base.
